How does your school library work? Do your students go at a scheduled time once a week? Are they allowed to go at other times or before or after school? How many books are they allowed to check out? Are they allowed to take them home?

Our kids go once a week. They can check out one book, but they have to leave it at school. I'm just wondering what other schools do.

Our students went once a week and checked out one book that they were allowed to take home. I had 1st graders and our building was k-1.

Most of our classes go once a week for book exchange. There are 2 periods each day when students can go down individually (with a pass) to exchange their books. I think it is also open a couple of recesses and one day after school for exchange. Most students are allowed to check out 3 books at a time, although Kindergarten can only have 1 and grade 1 and 2 can only take 2. Students who have lost or overdue books can't sign new ones out. The books can go home with the students and are on a two-week loan.

My class goes once every 6th day (6 day schedule). They can check out 2 books at a time and take them home. Our librarian is with us on Days 4, 5, and 6. I allow my kids to go down during homeroom time since she teaches all day too.

We send groups of 4-5 kids down to get a book once every two weeks. I made up a schedule for what kids go on which days.
At my old school they had a specific library time where it was an actual "special" and they got to pick out books at the end. I liked that better b/c I didn't have to worry about sending certain groups to the library at certain times.

They are allowed checking out 2 books and they can take them home.

Last year my students (2nd graders) went once a week every Tuesday. Depending on their level, they were allowed to check out 2 books. They kept the books for a week so yes they went home. They were not allowed to go any other time during the week.

My class goes to the library once a week for a half hour. Each student is allowed to check out one book and the books are allowed to be taken home. They can return to the library any day during their recess to get another book. They aren't allowed to check out another book until they return their book from home.

My class goes every Thursday, but students at our school are allowed to go throughout the day to check out books.

Our students go once a week and check out only one book. At our old school (gosh that sounds like a Magic School Bus video) they were allowed to check out 2 books. I think they can only check out one at a time because we are a new school and don't have tons of books yet. Our students are allowed to go throughout the day to checkout a new book if they need to. I make mine take an AR quiz before they can take them back.

We go every 4th day (4 day schedule). Our librarian is half time. So they go to library as a special for one semester, then I take them at a certain time and day the second semester. They check out one book and can take it home.

We have a library time once a week, but our whole class can't go at once - it's a small parochial school with a really small library - we don't all fit. So, I send groups of about 5 during the library period. They can take 3 books (I think) and keep them for 2 weeks. They are free to take them home.

We have library time once a week. The librarian will either read a book or do a lesson with the students. They are allowed to check out 2 books. The books can go home. They may go to the library as needed to return their books (as long as they aren't going several times a week.) Our library is open from 7:15-3:30. We also have family library night 2 times a month where we have story time, do activities and book checkout (parents may also check out books).

I like the sound of the family library night. Do you usually have a good turnout?

My kids also go once a week, and she has some afternoon free times, but I always forget.

We also have family literacy nights, were kids can read in the library, take ar test etc. Our best attendance nights have involved other things as well (kids reading aloud their writing in another room, listening to an adult read in another room etc).

We go once a week. Our librarian is full time. Kids can also go during recess, or any time she doesn't have a class. (She doesn't have a class every period.)

I think they can check out five books and bring them home. Our librarian is AMAZING!! The best thing is our kids can publish books in writer's workshop and then she puts them in the library. There are 25 years worth of kids books in the school library.

Older kids can be library volunteers and help shelve books or help younger kids check out books.

We also have a professional library and can check out teaching books. Parents can check out parenting books.

We go once a week and they can check out books at that time. How many they can check out depends on the grade that they are in and the time of the year. Everyone starts out able to check out one, but by the end of the year my 5th graders could check out 2. They are allowed to take them home, and I feel that's important. That may be the only books that they ever see at home and you can't learn to read or even learn to like to read if you can only see books at school.

Thanks! It sounds like most schools let kids take the books home. I'm hoping my school will start letting our kids take theirs home. I was just reading about how few books some kids have at home and it makes me want to put books in the students' hands even more so than before.

Yes, we usually have a good turn-out when we have special activities going on. I'm going to try to do a night where my 5th graders can show their powerpoint presentations on the Industrial Revolution. (It's hard to get the older kids and their families to come...)
