Well, at least it is in my area. How many districts do you sub for? How long have you been subbing? What grade level(s) is/are your favorite?
This will be my first year subbing (if I don't land a teaching position in the next 4 weeks). I am a sub for 2 districts now, and hope to add 2 more in the next few weeks (when the applications become available) I student taught 3rd grade last spring and taught 3-4 and 5-6 this summer. I loved them! I also am one of the few that like middle schoolers. 1-2 are too young for me, but I think I could hack it as a sub. Sooo basically, I like all the grades I'm certified for! haha Question - Today I was trying to figure out my work schedule in addition to subbing so that I am able to make my rent and then some every month. Is it reasonable to figure, once the school year gets settled in, to sub 3x a week if I'm in 3-4 districts?
I didn't even answer my own questions. Silly me! This will be my third year subbing. I will be subbing for two districts. My favorite grades to sub for are the middle grades. I guess I like the challenge! breezymarie07, I think it's safe to say that you'll have at least three days a week of subbing if you're in three to four districts.
I think I'm going to be brave and start substitute teaching. It's a big leap, since I graduated three years ago and haven't been in a formal classroom since. I'm mostly nervous about teaching outside of my licensure subject and age group. Everyone seems to tout it as the best way to find a formal teaching job (or even long-term subbing positions), so maybe it will open up some new opportunities. I'm currently on the sub list for 24 school districts and applying for 2 more (one has the most ridiculous application process). Although I love working with older high school/middle school students, I think that the younger grades will be interesting as well. I considered studying elementary eduction, but I was afraid my poor math skills would be a hinderance.
Twenty-four districts!? You are brave... There have been many times where I've had to struggle through teaching math in an elementary classroom. I absolutely hate math! I wouldn't want to be in my class if I were a math teacher. :lol:
I'm not sure where ravin is but in OH some districts are very small. Our junior high/high school has 25 teachers. I think our district has under 40 teachers total. A lot of days we don't even have one sub in the building, so it could be that ravin is just hoping for everyday work.
There are somewhere around 5,000 active subs in the system, so it can still be slim pickings. All public school districts in the area except for 3 use the same consortium. You can filter job postings for specific districts or buildings, which some people do. In the winter people tend to stick closer to home.
