My district just changed the school day hours for elementary:
    Was 8:45-3:20
    Now 9:10-3:45

I am not a happy camper!!! I have a difficult time helping students focused in the afternoon as it is, and now our afternoon is going to be even longer. Great.

What are your school's hours? If you have experience with various schedules, do you prefer school to start earlier or later?

    8:50-2:00

In my opinion, our school day should be extended. It's really hard to fit everything in, especially since the students have 2 specials a day on average.

I do prefer to finish the day earlier, but getting up early makes me feel like I am dragging the whole day. So, I think it might be kind of nice to start later.

We are k-6 and go from 8:45-3:15. Teachers have to be here from 8-4 (although I always stay later). I would prefer to start a little earlier, as I run into the same problem of keeping the group focused in the afternoon. They always have P.E. after lunch, either immediately after, or the last task of the day. If they have to do work after P.E. in the afternoon....forget about it!

Our teachers have to be at school for 7 1/2 hours. Kids are there for a little over 7 hours.

I think our time is about right. By the time the kids leave they are DONE. Much later would really stink...

My school's hours are 7:50-2:10, but only 7:50-12:30 on Wednesdays. I think it's too short.

Used to be 8-2:30 (students could arrive at 7:30, teacher hours 7:30-3:00).
Three years ago we switched to 8:30-3:00 (students arrive at 8:10, teacher hours 7:30-3:30).

I prefer the earlier mornings. I also don't like that my day is 30 minutes longer with no compensation.

    8:10 to 2:45 here...

If we were past 3:30 in the winter time, we'd be getting kids home when the sun starts to go down....it's dark by 6 here in the winter time.

It's dark here by 4:30 in the winter...By the time some kids get home, it will be dark out. :( The buses will be dismissed a little before 4, and some kids are on the buses for an hour.

I am eager to hear what parents think of the time change.

I see no difference between getting on the bus in the dark or getting off the bus in the dark. Dark is dark whether it is early morning or late afternoon.

Same, but we have an assembly every morning so by the time I do bathroom break and morning work it's actually 8:30. I like that I can get all the subjects in.

8:10-3:15 here. We're a K-8 school. My hours are 7:40-3:30. Of course, I'm there earlier then that & I tutor 4 days after school. DS' high school is 7:20-2:20 (I think, it might be 2:35 or something like that).

I see your point. But it's a bit different for my students though. Their parents may be there for them to make sure they get to school in the morning, but after school, I have students who go home to an empty home until their older sibling or parent come home; and that's either an hour or more later. So, it's concerning to me as a parent and teacher with students who would be home by themselves as it starts to get dark. :(

:( That is sad to me as a parent; especially for those kiddos who's parents aren't home yet.

    Teacher day: 8:00-3:05
Next year I will be in a "late" building. The teacher day will be 8:45-3:35 and the student day will be 9:00-3:30.

My school's hours (for teachers) are 7:15-3:15. Students start at 7:45-2:45. It is a K-8 school. I like the hours, but I think the population I teach would be better served by a later start time. They are tired in the morning, and after breakfast it's hard to motivate them the first 30 minutes or so. When my daughter went to a k-6 school it started at 9:10. It was hard for me as a parent but good for her.

It also stinks because it's harder to go outside and play! They dont play with their friends at 6:30 am, but the would at 4:30 or later if they could.

That was my thought too! They need to have time to go play outside a little bit!

We are probably going to be 7:30-3:00 next year. I feel very lucky because another group of schools will be 8:30-4:00-and I would just hate that. Dismissal takes roughly a 1/2 hour to complete-the after school activities would go until 5:30-that's just way too late. Kids start gettting hungry, plus I agree the kids start zoning out around 2:00-to have to teach 2 more hours after that-ugh!

    Teachers- 8-4

    Kids- 8:30-4

I dislike it. We used to start at 8 and go until 3. Our work hours were still 8 hours a day, but more planning time and less time with kids since they started later. It is a LONG day for the kids, and our 2 hour after school program now ends at 6 pm! For the younger kids, by the time they get home they basically can eat dinner and go to bed. I used to work after school but couldn't stand the thought of going with kids until 6- before even mentioning getting schoolwork done! It's also extremely hard to run any errands such as getting to the bank or post office- most places close at 4:30 in my area and we're not really allowed to leave the school on lunch break or planning period.

K to 8--8:15 to 3:15 (but students start coming in at 8:05, and buses don't arrive until about 3:25)

    Teachers--7:30 to 3:45

When I student taught, it was (I think) 8:45 to 3:45. I didn't notice the afternoons being difficult for the kiddos to get through. But that was a K-5 school with almost no after-school activities.

    7:30-2:00

I wish we started a little later b/c many of my students have to wake up as early as 5 to catch the bus at 6. We don't have enough buses some of the buses do 3 routes for elementary. By 1:00 many of my kids are exhausted.
