Without knowing the history of those buildings, I can't really decide if that bothers me that much.

Information online about these buildings ranges from official Navy press releases (oops, we didn't realize what they would look like from above until after they were already in construction) to paranoid conspiracy theories (they were built in the same decade as a retirement home with a similar layout, so there MUST be a NAZI CONSPIRACY, OMG!)

I tend to think it was an honest mistake made by the Navy which went unnoticed until all of the mapping services started showing satellite images of things (like Naval bases? I'm not sure I'm okay with that) and now they are going to fix it by adding to it and making it look less like a symbol with various meanings, including the symbol of the Nazi party in Germany and the hate and racism connected with it, but also with peace, hope, and good fortune.

Symbolism aside, it seems like a reasonable layout for a dormitory, with the nice courtyards for each wing.

Oh now I see it. It seems sort of stange that in the original blueprints and models they make, this would go unnoticed.

I agree it should be fixed but definitly not where I like to see my tax dollars spent.

Actually, from what I know about the swastika, it's meaning is not what the German Nazi's made it to be. They distorted the meaning.

There's a business in a town a little ways from me that tore up their carpet to remodel and found tile with a ton of little swastikas on it. There was a big controversy because they kept it instead of removing it.

I guess i doesn't bother me if they aren't promoting the Nazi ideals.

Well the friend who told me they are being torn down explained this to me (her husband is in the navy here), "The architect who designed the base was a nazi sympathizer. The building next to that one is the shape of a nazi insignia also. Both buildings are being torn down and new one are being built". So who knows. It's just kinda strange to see that.

I'm lost. Can someone describe what's going on on the map? I understand it's a map of San Diego, CA but I'm not sure if there's something on the map you're all seeing that I'm not. :thanks:

It's also labeled "Swastika Bldg". I didn't get it until someone posted that article.

This had risen to urban legend status
the 4 buildings have about 377,000 item Results on Google
some say it was built on purpose (nazi sympathizer)
some say it was an oops
some say it will be torn down
some say it will be remodeled

I get that it looks like a swastika, unintentional or not, Nazi-related or not, but why is it labeled "Swastika Bldg"? Is this its actual name, or was this intentional but not intended to promote Nazism?

I'm with other posters that as long as it wasn't intentional/promoting Nazism it really doesn't bother me as its not something that is visible from any angle but the air. I can think of better uses for my tax dollars other than remodeling a building so it will look nice on Google Maps :)

Just the thought of knowing it's there doesn't sit right with me. I don't really think it was an oops. If they(whoever it was) had plans drawn, they knew what they were doing.

the name "Swastika Bldg" was put there by Google

Back in Yuma we had a bridge and Dam that has Swastikas on it. People said it was built by German prisoners sounded like a true story BUT it was build before the Nazis came to power, it was built in 1909.

From the Oct 26 2009 "Yuma Daily Sun"

This year is the 100th anniversary of the Laguna Dam, which is the first dam ever built on the Colorado River....

No structures like Laguna Dam existed in the United States, so the engineers traveled to India. While in India, the engineers came across a symbol that represented a Hindu goddess with power over water. They thought it would be appropriate to place the symbol on the Laguna Dam.

This decision would cause controversy years later because the symbol was nearly identical to the Nazi swastika, but at the time it was an innocent decoration.

Good info, thanks IrishDave. Why would Google label it "Swastika Bldg?" If that's not the name and I was associated with this building I'd be ticked at Google, to say the least.
