I'm going in on Monday to sign the contract for my new position and meet with the head of HR. I haven't discused salary, but I'm sure I make more at my old position than my new one. I was wondering if they ever try to match what you were making or if they just place you on their current pay scale. And do most places start you at the bottom of the pay scale even if you have a couple of years teaching? I am taking the position either way, just curious as to what I can expect.

A lot of that depends on the area you teach in. In my area, you are placed where you fall on the new districts salary scale--it's all based on years experience and education. In my area, they count all years of experience.

I was started on Step two this year because it is my second year. But I'm in a new district.

If you have over 5 years experience, most new schools will start you on year 5 regardless of how many you have. Hope that helps.

Around here, a district can start you at step 1 if you have less than 5 years, step 5 if you have 5-10 years...

My district started me on step 2 even though my first year was as a full year maternity leave position...I was lucky! My girlfriend just got a job and they are starting her on step 13 (this is her 13th year teaching). I think a lot depends on the district. :) But it doesn't hurt to negotiate if you can!

    Wow- that's great.
Are you teaching in Mount Laurel or Ewing? I've been looking in both areas without much luck.
