Had an idea and don't know how well it will work. I am thinking since i can't really afford a rug for my room...what if I used(now try to follow me on this) one of those rubbery mat things. They have alphabet letters that you can push out. It all fits together like a puzzle. Anyone know what I am talking about and where to find this. Has this worked for anything?
Yes, I saw one at Lowes? or Home Depot?..I think. Try their website. I am not sure how good they are, or if after some time the alphabet may get messed up or missing letters. Maybe someone here has used it.
Let me check. Here is a link where I saw it... http://wendiholmes.blogspot.com/2007/08/my-1st-grade-classroom.html last pic at the bottom.
5 by 7 rugs are on sale for 19.99 at my Walmart...you could squeeze the kids on it if ya had to...thats what I'm doing
Check out Lowe's and Home Depot. They usually have 6' by 8' rugs for about $20 to $30. Edit: Not the website, the store.
I have used the rubber mat pieces for my rug for a few years now and it works great. I bought mine at Target (they are numbers), one set of primary colors and one set of pastels and mixed them together. Lakeshore has some too, check around for the best prices!
VERY expensive. I have limited space as well. I have a hug eye sore in my room. There is a sink right in front by the whiteboard where we do our group work etc. I need to get a rug to work around that.
Ms. Bee, I just thought of something... Have you looked all through the room you'll be teaching in? There might be a rug there already. If not, ask the principal if there is a already a rug at school somewhere. He/She might not realize that there is no rug in there. I've been using my own rug for the past few years, but someone moving into a trailer gave me their HUGE rug (school property). I was walking through the school with the principal looking at furniture (our grade level is changing wings, and we're trying to figure out what should stay/go), and I asked where Ms. B's rug was, because she gave it to me. We couldn't find it, and it was kind of primary-themed anyway, so the principal said the school would order one and I shouldn't have to pay for one. Main point: bring it up with your principal first.
My Sam's club has those rubbery mats...I don't remember what they cost or how many pieces there are. It was primary colors though.
I have a huge rug in my room that covers most of the floor....but I don't have one for us when we come to the front of the room for instruction. The rug is only in the area of where the desks will be. Only problem with me and asking the P is I will only have a few days to work in my room. Everyone else gets a head start while I am in new teacher training etc. I kindof need to get everything bought before I start working on my room because I won't have time. Now I completely understand if I buy something and then ask and one comes up and I take mine back but for now I need to be on the safe side.
I bought a set of the alphabet ones from a thrift store a few years ago. They had apparently JUST come in because they weren't priced yet. I think I got the whole set for $3 or something ridiculous... I had to clean them really well because they smelled like dog, but that's a small inconvenience for such an amazing price. Of course, i put them in my room that year and was told i couldn't use them because "they're too distracting." Then again, that was the same person who told me how to rearrange my room after I had it the way I liked it, and the one who told me i couldn't put things on the walls because it would distract my kids. I'm so glad i don't work there anymore I need to get them out of storage and use them as a "rug" in my reading area. Thanks for reminding me about them!
Sam's Club has the rubber mats. A package of 8 squares is $21. I bought 2 yesterday after seeing them in a K classroom where they have been used for a few years. They have really held up in that room and they were easy to snap together. I had a 5x7 rug... those mats in that K room look much better than my rug did after a couple years. I am VERY excited to put these mats in my room tomorrow!
