I learned a cute idea for rounding.

    0,1,2,3,4 (wimpy) stays the same

5,6,7,8,9 (buffy) pumps up one more.

I use the term "bossy neighbor number" for the number that tells what to do for rounding. Then we use "5 and up-goes up", using your hand to show 5 then a thumbs-up. And "4 and down-safe", doing a safe signal like in baseball to show the number is safe and doesn't have to move. The kids really like it and it's funny to hear them think it out this way.

We use "4 and down make it round" (it is the number in the place being rounded to) and "5 and up, bump it up."

Here is a chant that another teacher shared with me after I encountered the same frustrations you are facing.

It is sung to the tune of a military cadence of "Sound off"

    Rounding numbers is so fun!
We will round them til we're done.
If a number's one through four,
Round it down right to the floor.
If a number's five through nine,
Round it up, that is just fine!
    Round up, round up.
    Round down, round down.
    1,2,3,4...1,2...3,4!
