    • Elementary, Middle School, or Secondary? Elementary (my school is JK-8)
    • Grades taught: This year, 5-8. Next year, probably 5-8 and some work with JK.
    • Self-contained, Resource pull-in, Resource push-out, or other: Resource--in class
    • How many parapros do you work with (or paras - how many teachers do you work with)? We have 5 on staff who I will be responsible for scheduling into the classes where they are most needed. None will be assigned to me. This year I worked in the classrooms of 3 teachers; timetabling for next year isn't done yet, but it will probably be about the same.
    • How many years teaching/assisting? Next year will be 9.

-a little of both at times. I think I need meds for some of the craziness that goes on.
That's why I found this forum for some relief, some inspiration and some comfort in knowing I;m not alone in this sometimes.

    Newbie

I'm a newbie to this site and am not teaching yet. I'm working on my alternative certification and actually have a interview with a Sped. Director when she gets back from vacation in July. I currently work with children with Down syndrome in a non-profit setting. I can't wait to start teaching, and I'm sure I'll have lots of questions for you all.

It's great to get to know everyone a little better!

I'm still here, even though I'm 98% certain I'm getting out of public school teaching. I'll still be working with individuals with disabilities in some capacity, though, and I'm sure I'll still be around to soak up the great advice that's here for the asking!

Hey Emily, I'm curious. How much work program stuff did you guys do when you taught the 6-10 as opposed to what you're planning on doing with your 10-12?

For example, I taught 6-8 last year (and will do so next year too but in a different school) and the only work program stuff they did was push in chairs and wipe down tables in the cafeteria after breakfast. Did you do more or less than that and what are your plans for fall with your older kiddos?

    -------

Oh and :lol:mad:STG. I was kinda thinking the same thing...

I love teaching special ed. but being expected to teach 6 grades at once is not my favorite thing to do, especially when my behavior assistants aren't qualified to assist with the behaviors and have no clue on how to assist with academics. Oh, and for some reason my class is the only one that doesn't receive educational support from educational assistants, even though all my students have mild to moderate cognitive delays along with severe behaviors and the other classes only have students with severe behaviors. I feel that sometimes I get punished for being a teacher that is able to successfully implement a behavior modification program so that teaching can occur... With all of my complaints, I don't think I will ever go back to teaching regular education:D.

I primarily teach Jr. High, grades 7 and 8.

I have two 7-8 self-contained classes and one period of pull-out resource for 7-12.

We have 3 aides that float between grades 7-12. I have one for my two instructional classes.

    This will be year 3.5.

I love it most days. The paperwork gets old and they just added more to my IEP process, but working with kids keeps me smiling.

Hey guys :) I'm new to the board, thought I'd reply to this thread!

I've taught both Middle and High Schoolers
    Grades taught: 6-8, 9-12
    Self-contained
I've had a range, from 1 to 2, but next year I might have up to 4
    I've taught 2 years total
I had a great first year, but a terrible 2nd year. Here's hoping the third is the best so far!

Can I also ask a really silly question? I've heard of special day classes a lot. Are they basically the same as self contained?

Alright folks, I've updated our list. I also added grades taught, etc. From the looks of things, we have no secondary resource teachers at AtoZ. C'mon... I know you're out there!

Also, if you notice that I've got you listed in the wrong category or for the wrong grade, etc. please let me know and I'll fix it. :D
