Hi, I am a reading teacher and I have been teaching RICA prep for over 10 years. I would be happy to answer some short questions for students having difficulty passing the exam. For more extensive questions - I can refer you to my website (Rene's RICA) and provide information for additional services. Here are a few tips. 1. Domains 2 and 5 are the heaviest weighted domains on the exam so it is important to be really familiar with the content of those domains. 2. Domain 2 - Phonemic Awareness and Phonics are not the same thing. P.A. is only referring to sounds orally while phonics includes letter/sound correspondence. This means if the scenario has words or letters - it is always referring to phonics. P.A. activities will not have words or letters as part of the experience. 3. The RICA assessors are looking for a specific format for the instructional plans. The plan must include specifically what the teacher does (not just the student) - explicit instruction and/or modeling. I think the best format to use is " I do, we do, you do" Also, you can bullet the answers for the instructional plan.
I don’t need help passing the RICA, but I will add some users who do: @Ryanthelion @bananas1964 @JesusIsMyTeach @ctsai @Kssmith Hopefully, these members see this and can ask the questions they need. Good luck everyone!
Welcome to A to Z, Rene Mendel. Feel free to weigh in on any of the many threads in which questions about RICA have been voiced. Let me point out, though, that A to Z forum rules strongly discourage self-promotion.
Thanks for adding my name! I'm just now seeing this. I contacted Rene a couple of months ago. She's great!
Hi TeacherGroupie, I just wanted to say thanks for the contact info to Rene Mendel. I finally passed the Rica! I could not have done it without her input! I studied hard, practiced with my students, had 2 sessions with Rene and kept plenty of notes! I took the video assessment after failing the written assessment 5 times and passed on the first try! I really appreciate the support from you, Rene Mendel and this forum. Thanks a million to both of you! Lisa
