I worked at a school for 9 years before I left 3 years ago. I really loved the job but had to work a 2nd job just to pay bills because we were without a contract for 4 years. I’ve now been Riffed from my new school because of Covid related budget cuts. While I was looking for openings I saw that my old school was hiring. It’s for the exact position that I left and in the time I’ve been gone there is a new contract and administration. Would you apply for your old job back? I’m so conflicted- on one hand I loved the job and the people I worked with and did leave on good terms but on the other hand it feels strange to ask for a job that I resigned from back. And advice/experience would be appreciated.

Give it a try. I’ve known several people who left a job and later returned to the same school and/or job.

It's worth a shot. I think it would be different if you left in a huff because you didn't like that school, but that's not what happened. I know of at least one person in my district who left and came back a couple of years later.

If the school was that good like you say and you left on good terms with everyone... Then I'd definitely go back. If asked why I left or have come back, I'd say I moved states. But I wouldn't ever mention to anyone in the school especially admin that it was money issues. However, nothing strange at all about returning to a workplace you once left. Good luck

I appreciate the advice but I can’t lie and say I moved states because obviously my current school is on my resume and in a neighboring town.

Yeah, lying isn't a very bright thing to do. Just say you wanted to take advantage of another opportunity that came up but would love to return to this school since you enjoyed working there (if that is true).

I don't think it's a good idea to say this. They're re going to get the impression that if another opportunity comes up again, you'll take advantage of that too

If you left on good terms, why not apply again? Can’t hurt.

    So, lying is better?

Use the same reason you told them when you left the school. If they're aware you left because of a better opportunity elsewhere then use that same reason for coming back

    Yes, still better than lying.
