What do you do about retaining 7th and 8th grade students? For us, it's up to our administrator, so usually, kids are "placed" instead of "promoted" to the next grade.

We don't retained. We require a mandatory summer school for a few weeks. If the student doesn't go or do the work, they still move up to the next grade.

We retain here. They are required to go to Summer School. If they don't, then they stay back and are retained.

The idea that one of our students would repeat a year is laughable. Sadly. A student can (and has) fail every single course every single grading period and the thought of retention wouldn't be even entertained. :(

We do retain but not often. If a student does not pass the state tests in the spring (mainly Reading and Math) then we fill out a "Light's Retention Scale" and meet with our admin to discuss the student. The Light's attempts to determine of retention would be harmful or helpful to the student.
