Since I've been unable to land a job, I thought I'd check to see if something is wrong with my resume... The formatting doesn't come out well here, but the verbiage is what's important I suppose. Thank you!!

I would be sure to write the school's name in the objective.

I would also see if you can add anything to your teaching experiences. Did you have experience with the common core standards, RtI, PBIS, or any other programs used by districts you are applying? Did you do anything with teaching reading and writing in your history classes?

The objective seems vague and generic. What job are you actually applying for?

Also, have I done any professional development? Add that! Are you trained/certified in anything? Responsive classroom, etc? Beef up the bullet points under ur classroom experiences. The call center portion can be smaller- u want to show that u r ready for the classroom, not answering phones ;-)

I also agree about ur objective. Add some personality and excitement into it. Good luck!!

Question first - I am presently seeking my Masters (just started last week, well after this resume was written), do I add that? If so, do I put in a projected graduation, since I don't know how long it will take me?

It is tough to add a school name in the resume when it is uploaded to a school district, but I've been wanting to work on the objective - will definitely look at that in the morning.

The call center info was recommended to be on the resume because of interaction with parents, obviously key with teaching, as well as having a wealth of financial aid knowledge, which could be beneficial if I teach HS.

My college career center advised having the Avon experience due to showing a leadership position in a job, while also filling in employment gap (I was a SAHM from the time my oldest was born in the 90s).

As for professional development, I had to admit that I have NO idea how to get any of that when not an employee of a district. Would love tips on that.

I will digest the tips given (and will definitely take as many as I can get) and work on the resume in the morning - thank you!!

I would take off the objective -- it doesn't matter.

List your certifications first in your education section.

Take off the last three jobs. It makes your resume too long. And, I don't think they will matter to a principal in the long run.

I'd take off the unrelated work experience. On my resume, I put all the education related things that I have done (student teachings, tutorings, internships, contracted teaching). I have gotten positive comments on my resume from principals on the layout and information.

I've tinkered some with it. Is it really beneficial to remove the Financial Aid and Avon information? Those two experiences now fall onto page 2. Being that I am older, will principals wonder why I have nothing listed for employment prior to 2009?

    I GREATLY appreciate your assistance!!

If they are falling on page 2, try to decrease the size of your font. I had to make my font smaller in order to fit everything on, but it wasn't too small that it's difficult to read.

I would not suggest decreasing font size. If you are, as you say, a little older candidate, you are expected to have more experiences. A two-page resume may be appropriate for you.

I reread what you wrote, and it is good that you added some specifics. I would suggest that you work on wordsmithing your education-related experiences next. For example:

Crafted Unit Plan relating to the historical documents in American History influencing the United States Constitution could be changed to Crafted unit plan to help students synthesize information from historical documents to deepen their understanding of the United States Constitution.

Also, how did you engage students from the Louisiana Purchase through the civil was? Share some specifics!

I think that you could easily add in the district into your objective this way it is a little more personalized and more likely to be read.

I definitely think you should keep your objective as sometimes they have multiple job openings and you are looking for a specific opening. I would probably also add history or social studies as you do not want a science job.

I think that you could explain the employment gap in an interview.

Just from your resume, if you take off those extra jobs, you don't look like an older candidate, so it won't eliminate you from interviews.

With the Middle School endorsement, I can teach any subject in the school, giving me more options. I'm comfortable teaching anything, though would prefer not to teach math (have to brush up on those skills a bit I think). I don't want to limit myself by saying a specific, but, I can only teach history, geography, and government in a high school.

I'm not worried about looking like an older candidate, I think it's to my benefit, especially having teenagers. Whether an application is online or on paper, they ask for date of birth anyway, so it is out there that I am in my 30s.

As for the other comment about explaining more about how I engaged students between those two time periods, I'll definitely do that - especially since I can bring in my use of primary documents in teaching, the students LOVED that!
