My challenge is that I am switching careers to go into teaching and would like to revise my resume for teaching. Not having any teaching experience, poses a problem. How can I tweak my resume in a way that would at least show my new career path in teaching and reflect some experience/knowledge?

There’s at least two factors that I think I can use somehow to tie my background to teaching. One being that I’ve worked for one education institution for 10 years as well as with two other institutions; the other being that I’ve also worked closely with students but on a college level dealing with work assignments.

There's a job fair coming up in April with a school district that I would love to get into. The certification I am currently pursuing is in Bi-lingual education & I know for a fact that this particular district has vacancies in this area. There's a shortage of teachers in this area and I want to use the opportunity to apply for one of these vacancies as well as with other districts. I appreciate the feedback

    Hi-

I'm in the same boat with years of experience in other fields, none as a teacher.

Without posting personal information, why don't you post your resume here? Just eliminate anything that could be tracked directly to you.

People here were very helpful in helping me tweak my resume and cover letter.

    Good luck!

I only have a couple minutes to respond and I'm sure you will get great advice here.

This is just my first observation:

It is too wordy and all information related to teaching needs to be featured prominently. Some of the material in your resume could instead be included in a cover letter. Bullet points help, too. I think you should list your education at the top. including any credentials or certification for teaching. The fact that an MBA wants to teach is TOTALLY impressive.

Your career objective needs to be shortened. Others may have better advice. But you may want to squeeze it down to Elementary School Teacher with special emphasis in bilingual education.

The trick with this is not to make people search for critical information.

Does this help at all? I had someone totally slash my resume for me and it really helped.

I bet you'll hear from the experts, soon!

Mine was full of people I managed, big accounts I brought in, P & L responsibility etc.

I basically took it all out and focused on any mentoring I did, training I conducted etc.

I am going to PM you

Thank you so much for your prompt response! I realize that I do need to shift some stuff around and be more precise in my wording. I also need help in extracting information that can be tie to teaching. I did like your suggestion on the career objective. I was trying to figure out how to best word it without making it sound like a standard answer. Thx

Thanks, Kippers. Now the trick is to go back to my job duties & responsibilities & see what I can pulled out & tie to education. Would like to say something about coordinating & setting up training session for students & employees; training new user on software & information systems. Just a few things that can be relevant to education & show some form of experience. What ya think? Am I on the right track?

Yes you are on the right track. It kind of stinks to take out all the really good stuff but if it isn't "teaching" it isn't going to help much anyway.

If you can say that you created and led training programs, I think that would help.

I am going to suggest that perhaps using a professional resume writer would be money well spent. You need someone to take your experience and make it relevant to the field of education. Most agencies will work on it until you are satisfied. There are common buzzwords and phrases that makes your experience geared more towards your new career path, and I personally think that this will be money well spent. Others prefer to do it themselves. It is an individual choice, but I have always felt it was money well spent, IMHO. Best of luck!

Before hiring the resume writer, let me recommend going through your background - including but not limited to what's in your current resume - and pulling out everything you've ever done that could even vaguely be characterized as teaching. Your work history shows several instances in which you were training coworkers, but let me suggest thinking about some of your interactions with insureds or providers as teaching. In addition, think about what you've done outside of work, especially as regards contact with kids who are anywhere near the ages you'll be licensed to teach. Were you ever a Sunday school teacher or assistant? Daycare provider? Camp counselor? Ever coordinated job-shadowing programs or Junior Achievement? That sort of thing can be useful.

It's possible that your licensure program, or the licensure program at the nearest good-sized bricks-and-mortar university, can recommend a resume writer who knows how to write resumes for jobs in K-12 public education.

I just wanted to add, managing and consulting and all of those business-related jobs might be good to put on the resume, as it shows that you can oversee people. Sometimes the schools don't look for teaching experience in a school, they just look for it reflected in other situations, like are you a "team player?" "can you persuade others to do what you want them to do?" "can you make others who work for you feel good about it?" "how good are you at handling unexpected situations and making learning fun?"
