Any advice to land a teaching job for the 2011-2012 school year in NYC? I have 8 yrs. of public school teaching experience in Texas. I'm certified in Early Childhood-8th grade and ESL. How do you go about applying for private schools? I am interested in only the Manhattan area. Advice?
Welcome, both to NY and to A to Z. NYC public schools have been under a hiring freeze for a couple of years now. The competition for jobs in and around NYC has ALWAYS been brutal in K-8 and just about every other area-- the only soft spots have traditionally been Chem, Physics and Math. The bad economy has made all that even more competitive. As far as private schools go, google is your friend. Try: Arch diocese of NYC Manhattan private schools Manhattan religious schools Manhattan charter schools. But get started ASAP-- as in "this morning."
I work for NYC DOE and you are lucky that you have an ESL license. Right now, ONLY sped., ESL and Speech therapy can be hired. Your best bet is to play up your ESL license. BUT IT IS VERY COMPETITIVE
