Hi all! I wanted to get some fellow teacher opinions on an issue I'm having in my current position. We filled out our intent forms a few months ago and I wrote that I wanted to meet with my principal to discuss plans for next year. When I met with her I explained that I'd really like a reading specialist position next year. She seemed thrilled and said she was hoping I would tell her that because our school would have an opening for one next year.

Fast forward a few weeks I had an interview for the reading position with my principal and a panel of other teachers from my building. After the interview my principal walked me out and told me how great I was and that she'd follow up with me soon.

It's now three weeks later and I've heard nothing. I don't expect to be handed this job at all but an update on where they are in the hiring process would be appreciated especially since I work in the building and pass my principal every day in the hall...

I've assumed I didn't get the position so I've been interviewing at other places. Another school told me they already spoke to two of my references and they'll recommend me for hire but they need to hear back from my principal first.

My question is why isn't my principal calling back with a reference? Things have been super weird since I interviewed and I really feel like I'm being strung along. If she's giving the reading job to someone else why won't she give me a reference?

So you have told your P that you applied for this other position? And what was her response?

If you haven't already, I think the best thing you can do is talk to her face-to-face and ask her to be honest with you. Tell her that you want the job at your current school, if possible, but that you want a reading job badly enough that you'll leave for it. Then, kindly tell her of your situation with the other school and be direct in asking her to respond to their request for a reference. It's possible that she might not want to hire you for the reading job but also doesn't want you to leave your current position, which is why she isn't responding to the reference request. It's also possible that she does want to hire you and is awaiting approval from HR or something. You'll only know if you ask her directly.
