Redditgifts is holding a drive for Teachers who need supplies!

I signed up to get a package- I thought I would share with the members here if you are in need of a care package. I haven't done this before but apparently redditors are very giving and helpful.

Here's the link for more information and to sign up- http://redditgifts.com/exchanges/redditgifts-teachers-2014/?source=hp-teach

I really love that there are communities out there who would do this for teachers!! :thumb:

Thank you for posting this! It looks so interesting. Do you know how the care packages get to us? Like do they give our name and address to someone who mails us care packages, or does the person maybe donate money through Paypal or something and then Reddit buys and ships the supplies to us?

If you click on the link they explain the process :) Reddit will have your info about where you teach for the sake of knowing you're a teacher but I think the person who will send you the package will only have your name and address on where to ship it.

I asked for SOFT facial tissue! :) Our school issued tissue is awful!

Thanks. I did that and you're right that is how it works. If I decide to do it hand sanitizer, pencils and a new mechanical sharpener is at the top of my list. :)

Ha! I signed up and asked for tissues, too! We don't get any tissues from the school though. The closest we can get is toilet paper (which we do use when we're fed up with buying tissues), and even then we have to sneak it because the custodians won't give it away willingly.

The first thing on my list was tissues also! My para was sneaking them from the secretary's supply all last year, haha. She kept saying that the school would prefer we buy our own, but classroom teachers don't buy their own...they put it on their supply list. I refuse to buy something that everyone else doesn't have to! I wonder what the odds of actually getting one of these "care packages" is...

The first week of school, I always make basic supply baskets for all of the specialists that work with my kiddos from the supplies parents bring in. I give each specialist a box of tissues, a box of tissues, a pack of dry erase markers, and hand sanitizer. It's not enough to get through the year, but at least I know I've done something.

From past Redditgifts events that I've read about, the chance you get something is really good. If you don't get a package from the first person you are matched with, they will try to rematch you with someone else and that original person may lose "points"- which means they might not be able to participate in future gift giving events.

I signed up and sent the link to 2 other teachers. Hopefully I will get something. We have a teacher supply closet we can order from but there are certain things my students like to use that are not on the list. I can spend my classroom money on it but I'll give this a shot first.

I got an email from Reddit saying that there were twice as many teachers as there were donors.

I was never matched last year. There are way more teachers signing up than donors so don't get your hopes up too much for this.

Sign ups end today! Right now there's a 1,000 sign up difference between teachers and givers. I know Reddit has been really trying hard to encourage people to sign up to give.

Even if I don't get anything out of this, I'm still hopeful. Every little thing counts. I decided to wait to see if I actually get anything sent to me before buying supplies I would normally pay for.

I wish they gave priority to teachers who are regular contributors to the Reddit community. One of the big reasons so many people don't sign up to give is because Reddit has such an active and giving community, but the perception is that a bunch of teachers sign up, get their goodies, then never contribute.

I know it is for many of us, and I know population of teachers needing supplies exceeds the bounds of those teachers who regularly post on Reddit, but (as someone who never got matched last year) I hope they do some kind of priority matching for people who didn't just visit the website for the free stuff. I didn't even enter this year because my district is giving us $200 for class materials so I know I am not as needy as others...

I never heard of this before so obviously have never contributed in the past. I will check it out further when I have more free time after summer school ends. It sounds like a great thing to get involved with.

Just make sure to pay it forward, either on Reddit or somewhere else! If you want to do something on Reddit, look into "Random Acts of Pizza" where people who need (or just want) dinner for the night ask for pizza. There's also an assistance sub where people post who need help, that can range from a small gift card or item from Amazon, to money for rent, whatever. Or, just post a picture of a cute cat and say something nice to someone. There's a big thing with Reddit and being positive right now!

I wish the education and teaching subs on Reddit were more active, because they seem to be dominated by a certain faction. It would be nice to have some balance there.

My wheels have already been churning about paying it forward. I'm broke right now, but I should be in good shape by Christmas!

I was matched, and surprised. I don't have cute kids, just kids in need. We only asked for Kleenex, filler paper, and hand cream. Many of our residential students lack these basics, and I can't imagine how nice it will make them feel just to know that someone, somewhere, cares about them. They expect me to care for them, but they're not so sure about the rest of the world! And yes, I always try to pay it forward - one of the first lessons in giving I taught my son was random acts of kindness. I have to say that it took him 20 years to get it, but I think I finally saw the light bulb come on over his head!

Irony... after they saw how many teachers put in, they decided to change it a bit and decided that private schools that charge tuition can't get matched. So I'm out- I do have a budget to spend, but there's no money for materials so I dished out $50 yesterday and will probably put in some more as the school year goes on. :(

I've already spent $200 on supplies out of pocket because my school expects me to use my budget on buying supplies through a certain vendor, but that company is so expensive that I would end up using all of my budget rather quickly.

(In addition to private school teachers tend to make $20k-$30k less than public school teachers)

wow - I'm surprised that you don't get money for classroom supplies. Parents at least buy what supplies you request for their children, correct?

It seriously floors me that private schools don't provide the basics for their teachers. What are they doing with the money then?

I'd be PO'd if I forked over tuition payments and there wasn't copy paper, Kleenex, etc for my child's teacher.

I actually just received a message. I have another package coming! I requested some Privacy Shields from Really Good Stuff, not expecting them. They are about $3ish each, so if they sent me an entire class set, they are extremely generous! Well, they are very generous even without a class set, but I will probably in tears if they send a class set! The packing slip on my colored pencils was about $40 and I thought that was very generous of them! I can't believe there is more coming!

I feel like today is Christmas! I also put up a Donor's Choose project a few days ago. I was given a code to do a matching donation. Then I found out that I was given 1/2 off thanks to the Bill & Melinda Gates fund. So I went ahead and funded it myself and it only cost me $36! I was given 75% off essentially, so I didn't mind spending a little money.

My donor sent me a message. I had asked for the Privacy Shields because I have double desks  I put in there that I realize they are costly, so some more affordable options are colored pencils, Kleenex, etc... Well I got the colored pencils and I'm getting a package from Really Good Stuff still.

Well, my school is private but doesn't charge tuition. Districts pay for the students to attend. I hope they hope they figure that out and not think it's like other private schools.

I had no idea what to ask for and I don't have a wish list, plus I'm not even 100% sure what I'll need. I really wasn't being accusatory or anything!:sorry:

No, it's OK! I put those on my list on a whim. They are pretty high ticket, so I didn't want to buy them myself. I can justify buying a few packs of Kleenex or whatever, but dropping $100 on privacy shields.... I just don't have it right now. I took a chance, and it might work out! Even if they just bought a few! Really only every-other kid needs one.

I went on there and saw the pictures people were posting (required). Someone got a brand new document camera!!!

Some of those posted gifts are amazing!

I don't expect anything of that sort. I also have a Santa that has pulled my information but hasn't done anything else. And that's just fine. Honestly, after two years of hearing how crappy and worthless teachers are, getting a pack of markers would mean the world to me. Just having someone out there appreciate teachers enough to think of them at all would make my day.
