They will not tell me why. I have talked to my previous employers, my references throughout the week. They all told me that they said positive things. Now I am told I am "non-competitive", I have no right to ask why I will not be hired at this point and all they can say is they are sorry I wasted my trip. They cannot even tell my how I went from contract pending to not getting the job. I will never look out of state again. I am done, I am done with education. Or maybe I will see if that rotten district near my home will hire me, at least they pay 80% of the time on time...... Right now, I am going home.
Wait, WHAT? They did WHAT? I wish I could throat punch a few people on your behalf and then get you a job with me in Ohio. Much less dramatic a move. We even need two Intervention Specialists.
I'm so so so sorry. I'm at a loss for words. I don't know the status but my district has a hs ss position. Isn't that your other certification?
Several schools in my district are hiring still. Don't give up! There may still be a job out there for you! I don't understand how you couldn't apply for jobs at districts near to your new location. Is that what "non-competitive" means?
I'm so sorry! I know right now your spirits are probably as low as they can get, but life has a way of straightening itself out. I'm hoping for the best for you and your family.
That is just unbelievably crummy. I'm so sorry!!! Is there any other position in Clark County you can apply for? Considering they are short so many teachers I don't know why they did this to you.
As others have said, in shock and feel sooooo sad for you. Can you try other districts while you are there? Can you at least make them compensate you for your travels? Do you have emails telling you to be there for a certain date?
All of Clark county rejected me, and I will never know why. So apply elsewhere isn't an option. They treated me as if I lied to them and I didn't........my dh is really angry at me personally, seeing as he sold his motorcycle to do this. I've probably ruined my marriage over this.
I get it now, I guess like doe in NYC. I'm so sorry then I wish I could go sue them for you, they really put you through hll and it's not right (I'm sorry I can't think of something better but I'm really really shocked at all of this ). You are in my thoughts
I've been following your story, and I am stunned by what happened to you. I'm very sorry for what you've been through!!
They are hiring for EC teachers in my area. NW North Carolina. If you are interested I can send you the link. It's a small town, that also accepts lateral entries.
Just in case you're still looking ... Baltimore City PS has over 100 vacancies at this time, most in SPED, math and science.
I pray that this is not the case. No job or motorcycle is worth losing a (seemingly) supportive spouse or marriage. I'm sure that once the dust has settled, you and your dh will fine. I wish you both the best.
Ugh, I'm beyond super upset for you wldy! I can't believe they won't even tell you why! Just know that you will get through this snafu. You haven't destroyed your marriage. I want to reach through this computer and give you a hug, and I'm sure many others do too. Just know that the A to Z Community is here for you.
You could sue them. If you did, it might stop them from doing this to someone else. Promissory Estoppel Under the theory of promissory estoppel, an employer may be held liable if the promise of employment results in a loss of some kind to the candidate. Generally, such a claim arises when an employer makes a job offer and the candidate, in relying on the offer, loses or gives up something of value in order to accept the offer, only to have the employer rescind the offer. Examples of such losses include a candidate leaving an existing job or incurring moving expenses to relocate for the job that an employer offered. The potential for recovery varies from state to state, but some courts have found that even if the employment relationship is merely “at-will,” the candidate is nevertheless entitled to the damages incurred as a result of his or her “detrimental reliance” on the offer.
:sorry: This is ridiculous! How can they possibly think it's okay to do this to someone? I don't remember but, were you renting back home or did you sell your house? I do remember you saying that your husband travels for work so he can be based any where but your son needs to start school. So wrong!!! I would contact the local news and tell them your story so at least others might avoid going through a similar ordeal. I really am sorry to hear this.
I'm so sorry! I know they gave you the run around but Monday school starts here and Aldine still has lots of positions. I got an email today about a sped middle school position that opened in Galena Park ISD. They're still hiring to fill up remaining spots here. I don't know your full story or certifications but since MI is home are there no spots left? Charter schools? Private, religious, etc?
So I was thinking as I was driving and I believe I know what happened. On Weds it was just a matter of getting the sub company PESG to answer the phone, I also gave them the school I subbed at the most, because they wanted to talk to them. On Thurs as well as Weds they told me everything looked good, no problems, contract any day......even hell district did the right thing and didn't try to screw me....Las Vegas said they gave me a good ref, so I am thinking when they called the high school and asked for a confidential reference the school refused (as they should have, since by using PESG they removed the need to personally hire subs) they only confirmed that I subbed in the building. Then PESG refused to give a confidential reference, which is their right by MI law, they only have to verifiy that I worked for them and can be rehired. (which I already have been for the next school year,,,, if they hadn't lost the contract) So that is two refusals for a confidential reference......which is exactly how it should be with how PESG works and MI state law.....however to some peon in Vegas it must mean I am lying and am a dangerous person......or something else horrible. Every other reference called and told me they had been called twice and all was well......so it was the whole sub company that screwed me and some horribly small minded people who cannot accept that things are not done the same way everywhere. Oh and they made it clear in that last phone call it was my fault for coming.....they never told me the contract would be ready this week. Except I have an email from the principal...... Screw them all. This time I am going north, avoiding the construction in Colorado....never been to Wyoming in the day time.....
I'm sorry this is happening, but I do have a bit of information about the school thing. Right now you are homeless. While that's a scary word, it actually gives you some options as far as your son is concerned. You can walk into ANY school and state that you are homeless and you need to get your son in school and this is the school that works for you and they can't deny you. Decide where you want to land, and as soon as you get there, play the homeless card and get him in school. They cannot deny a homeless child his right to an education.
I am so very sorry that this happened. I can't even begin to understand how a school district would do this, but then again, not much surprises me anymore. I wish you the best, and most of all I wish you peace for you and your family. Also, the info about homelessness is completely accurate--the law is referred to as McKinney-Vento, and your son would qualify based on this situation. Most larger school districts have a homeless student coordinator, and should be able to help you. Hang in there.
