I saw a posting on a neighboring district (15-20 minutes away) for a reading tutor. It would be workin with 5th grade students to get them ready for TAKS. It is three days a week for 2 hours at $20/hr for the weeks leading up to TAKS testing. Is this something that I should pursue? I meet all the qualifications listed. And this will give me TAKS experience that I lacked the first round for interviews.

    Go for it!!!

I would definitely go for it. Any experience working with children will look good on your resume.

Thank you, MI, I think I will contact them now. I already have an application in there so its just a matter of calling to show interest. I will keep you updated.

Defintely apply- the pay doesn't seem competitive with what most get for private tutoring, but it will be a resume builder.

eduk8r kind of gave it away, but I did get the job. The principal called me this morning to ask me to come in this afternoon. I was offered the job on the spot! I meet with the teachers Monday and start with the students on Tuesday.

That sounds very similar to the job I have now - except I'm a math tutor. It's for 2.5 months, but I'm working 6 hours a day/5 days a week. Everyone tells me it's a great foot in the door. I'm sure it is, but I feel like I'm on a 2.5 month job interview.

I'm feeling like that too and I haven't started yet. I know the principal will be looking at my students scores to see if they pass or have gone up to evaluate my performance. And even if I don't get a job at this district, then it will be a great addition to my resume and hopefully will get me a job in the district I live in..

Congrats - I am so happy for you :) And Reading is your thang :) A great way to shine for your principal.

I know you will be an outstanding teacher and that students TAKS score will go through the roof - (whatever the heck TAKS is) Make sure you get letters of recommendation before you leave.

    Thank you, INteacher!

The TAKS is Texas's state tests.

I will be SOL tutoring for math students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades. It pays $24/hr and will be 3 hrs twice a week for 14 weeks. I look at it as a great resume builder and experience, plus the pay's not too bad either!
