I was wondering if there are any secondary (grades 5-12) literacy or reading teachers who might be able to give me insight into what the job is like? What are the pros, cons, etc? I appreciate it.

It is the most stressful job you will ever LOVE. Seriously, there will be days when you want to go home and cry because it seems you're not making progress or the kids are soooo far behind, but once you see the methods start to work, scores start to go up, and attitudes start to change you'll be hooked. Literacy is soooo very important. Without these skills students are lost, not just in English class, but in EVERY class and in every facet of life. Even though my kids drive me crazy some days, it's so totally worth it.

    Thanks!

I appreciate this response. I am currently an English teacher and considering studying literacy. I like teaching English a lot, but I feel sometimes like I would enjoy working with a smaller group more. I often feel like I am letting some kids get lost in the shuffle just because I have so many (and so many papers to grade). I am also concerned that having kids and teaching English (and bringing home said papers) will be too hard when I choose to do so. I know there is a different kind of prep work involved, but I feel overwhelmed by stacks of papers very often...but I still want to teach!

Are you looking at a literacy coach or reading specialist kind of job?
In my area, the reading/literacy teacher is the English teacher...for most students. Then we have reading specialists who work with small group of below level students and literacy coaches who work with teachers to fine-tune and develop their craft.
