So as many of you know I'm looping with my class this year. I'm excited because they are all reading and want to keep that momentum rolling next year. I've decided to have an incentive plan-if they read 1,000 books this year, total as a class (and I'll have little forms they will have to fill out with questions so I know they read it)-I'm going to dye my hair pink! hmy: I've heard of principals shaving their heads and other things people have done to encourage their kids-I'm going to jump on that bandwagon-and yes, I'll really do it if they do it. I'm getting too old --not too many years left for spontaneous things like that; and at least would have a good excuse when my neighbors look at me funny-I'm encouraging reading. What do you think, am I nuts?
Sounds fun. I think you should have mini goals along the way. For example 100 books- wear silly socks 250 books- wear silly hat etc.
are you going to just use the cheap hair spray coloring that you can buy at like target? LOL I am sure this will motivate your kiddos to read! I like the mini goals idea. some ideas for mini goals: 150 books: wear silly socks 250: wear a silly hat 450: wear 2 different mismatched socks 600: wear silly socks and a silly hat 800: do a cartwheel or sing the abc's backwards with your eyes closed. 1000: dye your hair pink
She could combine those goals each time. Lol. So, when they meet the second goal she would wear silly socks and a silly hat. By the time she got to the last one, she'd be wearing silly mismatched socks, a silly hat, doing a cartwheel and singing the abc's backward all with pink hair.
Go for it -- the kids will never forget you. And, they will never forget that they were able to read 1,000 books with their favorite teacher
Great Plan I think it's a great idea! The kids will love it. I really like the idea of incremental rewards to keep the kiddos excited.
Thanks for the support guys! :thanks: And the great ideas-I love the idea of mini-goals (it will also help them with numbers and place value) and combining them each time-having to do the 1st one each time after. I do have a good hairdresser-however, they probably don't get a request for pink very often. It's amazing what will motivate them. I facilitate for a student book club and told them if they got 20 questions right (out of 25) in their competition I'd do a cartwheel (I really can do one-although more like a roundoff). Week after week they'd ask me-are you really going to do a cartwheel? Come on pay attention, you want to see her do a cartwheel, don't you? I think teacher's do need to be a little nutty sometimes-and if it makes them read more...
Kindercowgirl...I was thinking the other way around. Yeah, your hairdresser can turn you pink, but can they get you back to normal in a decent amount of time?
some more mini goal ideas: wearing mini goals: *wear silly socks *Wear a silly hat *wear a silly hat and silly socks *wears mismatched socks *wears a wig *wears a shirt that everyone drew on (have them draw on it the day before, it can be a old shirt, or an apron etc.) *crazy hair style *wears slippers action/doing mini goals: * does the chicken dance *skips through the hallway *says the ABC's backwards *does a cartwheel *does a summersault/foreward roll *walks through the hallway backwards *says the abc's with your tounge out *do jumping jacks
I love the idea of mini goals. My first thought was that it would be hard to maintain momentum with such a long range goal. Once again, that's why this place is great!
Yeah, that does make sense. Did I mention it's been a really long week (long month actually, tomorrow's the last day of summer school) !
