Round Robin Reading is frowned upon. How do you do reading groups?

Guided reading model. Instructional groups where children are all on similar book level. All kids have same book and read quietly to self. I check in with each kid as they are reading and offer support/strategies/etc.

If you want o do round robin SPARINGLY, I don't think it could hurt....

I do echo reading, choral reading, and partner reading. When the kids are partner reading, I pop in on each group & listen to them read.

I love echo reading. I'll read a sentence or short paragraph from a book (with lots of enthusiasm and intonation) and students repeat (or echo) the same sentence or short paragraph with the same enthusiasm and intonation. This also helps build fluency! Try it! :2cents:

Left-right reading - partner on the left reads left page, partner on the right reads the right page.
Red- yellow reading - I put a red or yellow chip in front of them then call red and yellow at different times during the story.
I echo read some pages or sentences.
We toss a small soft ball and the catcher reads aloud. The thrower can read with them.

We do Popcorn reading, one child reads then when finished with the page, they say "popcorn" and the other children who want to read raise their hands and one is chosen.

I like the red and yellow chip thing....

First I do a picture walk through the story, go over vocabulary. Do some phonemic awareness.
Next day, we choral read, review vocabulary
Next day, popcorn read, review vocabulary
    Last Day, summarize the story

Yes, I have the lowest group. We are using a program called ExCel and students are ranked by ability. We will move students to another class if there is any improvement. I have 4 groups and we rotate every 15 minutes. I also have 3 other aides for that hour in the day.

I do guided reading model as well. The students whisper read to themselves and when I tap the table infront of them they read aloud so I can hear them. The other students continue to read at their own pace at a whisper read. This allows me to listen to them read multiple passages and they aren't listening to each other read either.

During whole group reading instruction I do echo reading, choral reading, and partner reading.

In the guided reading model, what do the ones who finish before the rest do? I have heard have them reread, do they balk at that?

Yeah, I have them reread. We have a big long talk about fluency and what it means to read it like we are talking. So we focus on the words with the first read and then the fluency with the second read. So the kids have a purpose for rereading.
