So Im a brand new Kindergarten teacher (7 years of Pre-K in a child care setting before this) and this week has been all trainings and meetings. Being a newbie I'm hearing lots of terms that I'm unfamiliar with and its very overwhelming. By unfamiliar I mean that I've heard them but have no experience and don't know where to start. This is so hard - makes it hard to feel successful and that I can do this!

    Reading Groups:
    1) What exactly are these (is this the same as guided reading)
    2) Where do I start? (How do I assess my kids to put them into groups?)
    3) What kids of things are the other kids doing?

    AR
    1) How do I get started?

    HELP!

Reading groups can be the same as guided reading, but it doesn't have to be. They could also be skill or strategy groups.

I would start with the benchmark books and running records.

The other students can be doing anything independent. You could look into centers or the daily 5.

For AR, they have a test that the students take to get started.

Accelerated reader. It's a program where the kids are assessed and given a reading level and point goal. Kids read books on ther level and then take a test on them on the computer. They get points based on how many answers were correct. I think they take the assessment test 3 times per year.
