Alrighty so here's a puzzler for ya! My classroom door opens at 8:10. My Reading/Language Arts block is from 8:30 - 10:30. Schoolwide morning announcements are broadcasted on tv at 8:30 and I want to incorporate Morning Meeting this year. I teach third grade so we do 20 minutes of sustained silent reading from 9:00 - 9:20. My problem is: How do I fit in Morning Meeting, Reading instruction for our Basal (Houghton Mifflin), Silent Reading, Guided Reading/Centers, and L.A. instruction all in that time. Suggestions are welcome and MUCH needed!!! Edit: Students wander in the room between 8:10 - 8:30 and are officially late at 8:30.
We have a 2 hour block for reading/writing. We must follow specific min. for our reading block. Mine looks like this: 8:05-8:25 20 minute mini lesson 8:25-9:05 (Guided reading, independent reading, confering, strategic groups) While the students do independent reading I do guided reading 2x a week(back to back days), and conference or strategic group the other days. Strategic groups only meet 1x a week if needed. We are to meet w/ each child at least 1x a week to confer. Only kiddos 2 grades below are in GR groups. Strategic groups are for any kiddo that is struggling w/ the strategy of the week. The students also journal at the end of this time block, dealing w/ the strategy taught in the mini lesson It is very confusing at first and requires a lot of time management and organization on both ends. Not sure if this helped. I teach 4th grade.
