I am looking to restructure my reading block. We have 90 minutes for reading instruction and 30 minutes for writing. I would like to tie them together and somehow work my writing block into the reading content for the week. So far, writing has been a stand alone block of time. I have been reading The Daily 5 and think it's a great concept, but parts of it will not work for me. We are mandated to use the reading basil and the corresponding level readers each week and there is NO room to allow students to read a book of their choice independently. So, my questions are:

    1. How can I utilize the idea of The Daily 5 with the restrictions that I am under?

    2. How do you set up your reading block of time if you're using the reading basil?

    Thanks!

I am not familiar with the Daily 5 program. However, you can use part of your reading time for reading mentor text to kids and analyze what the writer did to help us as the reader. For example: I am reading an excerpt from The Incredible Journey. We are going to look at how the author created a voice for each of the characters. Then in writing time, we are going to work on writing pieces with voice.
