I have an interview on Tuesday for a 5th grade readers' and writers' workshop position. I'm not exactly sure how the position will work, but it is 5th grade in a middle school so I'm assuming the students would be coming to me for reading and writing.

Anyway, I'm somewhat familiar with the two, but have never really used either in the classroom and I feel pretty unprepared for this interview. Any major techniques or strategies you can give me would be greatly appreciated! :)

Oooohhhh, that sounds like a great job. Read Guiding Readers and Writers Grades 3-6 by Fountas & Pinnell. Just skim through before Tues. and you should get enough for the interview.

There has also been a lot of discussion on both this summer; do a search.

Good luck! Isn't fifth grade one of your favorites?

I am currently reading Nancie Atwell's book - In the Reading Zone; she does reader's workshop in middle school. It's a quick read and very helpful.

Beth...Read up on Lucy Calkins for writer's workshop as well as Ralph Fletcher and Katie Wood Ray. These are people whose names you want to through around while you're inteviewing. Also, F&P for Guided Reading. Good luck, Beth. Let us know how you make out!
