I have seen a variety of read aloud lists posted on different sites but was wondering about a few specific books I have not read myself and wonder if they are appropriate for a grade 2/3 classroom. A Wrinkle in Time? From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler? The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane - I have heard this is a very sad story but highly praised as well.... Shiloh? Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH The Tale of Desperaux Any imput on any of these books is appreciated! :thanks: PS I've read because of Winn Dixie and loved it but wonder if the religious aspect and the history of drinking would seem inappropriate to certain parents?:help:
I read Because of Winn Dixie with my 2/3 class last year. Almost all the students had seen the movie. I kind of skimmed over the bottle tree part. The book is so good and has so many powerful themes and characters. It was a great book club book. I did Tale of Desperaux as a read aloud last year. It became a favorite of my entire class! This book is wonderful for themes of good and evil. Great book! I read the Miraculous Journey and decided not to do it with my class. It was a very good book, but I wasn't sure if my younger students could handle it. I little girl is sick and dies, and her brother is beaten by their father. He ends up running away from home and and becomes homeless. That is only one part of the book, though. I would definitely judge it for yourself. Hope this helps!
I read Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH as a child in fifth or sixth grade. If I recall it was a little dark. (The cartoon always scared the bejeebers out of me as a kiddo :lol
