I would love to hear about the books everyone reads at the beginning of the year (that teach citizenship)and the activites that may go with them. I read the No David series -to aid in a discussion about following rules and manners. We do an anchor chart discussing peace makers and peace breakers. We also make our own David pictures. I am teaching a split so I have some of the same students as last year. i dont really want to do the same thing. Im looking for some fresh ideas.

I just discovered one called Each Kindness that I'm going to use this year the first day. It's about the ripples that we make by doing something nice for others.

¨The Crayon Box that Talked¨. I am pretty sure I first found out about that book on this site. It teaches about the importance of differences and including others.

We read Where the Wild Thing Are to lead into talking about rules
I am drawing a blank -can't think of the others right now.
I know we read Owen and then each kid gets a piece of yellow blanket (felt)...
    Hooway for Wodney Wat...

I like Enemy Pie and Odd Velvet to teach about friendship. Back to School Rules by Laura Friedman is a funny book in rhyme that my kids have enjoyed.

    Tattling Books

Don't Squeal Unless It's a Big Deal and A Bad Case of Tattle Tongue are good books that deal with tattling...a huge first grade problem!

    The Book of Bad Ideas.

This leads into a wonderful discussion after which we create a class book of bad ideas we shouldn't do.

I did this & had cut out what looked like hand mirrors & the students had to draw what they looked like & stick it on there.

I did this one later in the year when we had to work on parts of the story... the students loved the story & the illustrations. It has a good lesson that no matter what some one says you need to be true to you...
