I'll be teaching 3rd grade ELA (departmentalized) this year, which is brand new to me. My district uses the workshop model for reading and writing. I know that I'll use authentic literature to teach skills and strategies during my mini-lessons. My question is this: Do you set aside a few minutes each day to read aloud from a chapter book, outside of your mini-lessons? If so, where do you squeeze it in? How much time do you spend? Obviously there are benefits to reading aloud... promoting the enjoyment of reading, modeling fluency and expression, etc. I just don't know how I'll fit everything in!
I read aloud in 2nd and I plan to in 3rd. My kiddos would always beg me to read more! Last year, I had a weird 20 minute block in my schedule, so I read then. I'd also read the last 5 minutes of the day. I have no idea what my schedule will look like this year, but I WILL fit it in. Somewhere....
I'll be reading aloud to my grade 6/7 class--not sure when yet, or even if I'll be able to do it every day, but will at least 3 times per week for 15-20 minutes each time.
I usually do it for about 10-15 minutes right after they come in from lunch recess. This is separate from our reading block. Also, we often will do that if we have a few spare minutes throughout the day.
I do it everyday for 10-15 minutes. Our routine is that they come in from recess and go straight to the rug. It's a great transition.
I read aloud every day in 1st - sometimes more than once. I WILL fit it in in third, I will fit it in, I will fit it in....
Thanks for your responses. I will definitely work to fit it in somewhere! How do you choose your first chapter book of the year?
Last year I started with Because of Winn Dixie and they loved it. I will probably start with this again!
Do you begin reading a "chapter book" immediately? I have a number of "picture books" I want to read, but I'm also considering reading a novel - not sure when to begin it, though.
I start the year with 10-15 minutes and work our way to 20-25. I usually read right after lunch recess.
For me, the novel gets read daily. I will add in picture books as well if they fit what I am teaching at the time. They are usually treated as a mini lesson.
I fit it in by reading while the kids pack up. One group at a time gets their backpack and puts their folder in it while I read to the class. Packing up is so much quieter this way
This was my plan too. I'm so glad you mentioned Because of Winn Dixie, as that was the first title that came to mind.
