Last year I used The Kid Who Ran for President

I'll use the pic book First Day Jitters and Shy Charles and we talk about "irony."

I like to start with a great enaging chapter book. What are your favorites?

I enjoyed reading No Talking by Andrew Clements. It is about a fifth grade class in which the boys and girls dare each other to stop talking. It drives the principal nuts. The teachers have different reactions to the silence.

I'm starting with Holes. I found some great ideas for using this novel to teach thinking deeply about your reading as a read aloud for Readers Workshop. I'm really excited to get started!
