I start each year focusing on the various children who are shy, quiet, and/or problematic. I find that focusing on that group enables all the ones in between to get fit in fairly quickly. All children at some point fit into those three types, especially in the first month or two of school. I also try and take notice of specific interests the children have. During independent work time I will sit with all the different students at different times. This gives me a chance to talk and listen to them. I also have a very mobile seating arrangement, this enables the children to come and talk to me whenever they feel the need.
