OK, this happened during homecoming week where I was in charge of watching the 8th grade design their float trailer. A girl brought out a poster and on it read, “CONQEUR the TIGERS”. Remember, this display was to be paraded through town. So I ask the class if there was anything wrong with what was written and no one said anything…. Then I showed them the correct spelling…. “You spelled it wrong! It should be C..O..N..Q..U..E..R,” exclaims a student. “We need to change it.” “I’m not going to change it…” replies the girl who made the poster. Then comes a comment to me which just floored me…. “Why’d you tell us anything? We should just leave it up spelled wrong. Then we would just look stupid.” I turned to my colleagues who were also watching other grades working on their floats and said, “Why do I even bother….”
Wow... common sense does not exist anymore, unfortunately. Time to introduce the "Common Sense 101" course!
Common Sense has been dead for a while. Evidence is all around us. When I worked at a bank in I.T., there were motivational posters framed and on display at all the brach locations. Integrity.. Honesty.. Team Work.. you know all the buzzwords. Well, we used to joke that the Common Sense poster was rolled up and still in the original tube in the HR office. I could go on and on about some of the dumb things witness working at a bank.
