I know many of us, including me, are starting new positions soon. What are some good practical questions to ask your mentor or principal when you start?

    I'll start...

How many copies do I get? Do i do it myself or send it down to the office?
How do I call out or get a sub?
What are school rules regarding cell phones, ipods, food, etc.?
Is there a faculty dress code?
How do I access my computer/email?
What meetings do I have to attend each month?
What do people do for lunch?
    Where is the closest bathroom?
How do I order supplies? Do I have a budget?
Where do I get books? Do I/How do I sign them out?
What do I do if I need to send a student out?
What do I do if I have a classroom emergency?
How do I use the phone?

    Keep the list going...

Is there a laminator or die-cutting machine for faculty to use?
    What are the arrival/dismissal procedures?
Are there additional duties (such as helping out with dismissal or lunch supervision) that are expected of you?

What can I do to make everyone's job easier?

How many sick days do you get?

Personal days & Emergency Personal Days?

I know this post is a little old, but I've noticed a lot posts where new teachers are getting their first jobs. I thought it would be good to freshen it up and bring it back to the front.

    Other questions...
Are there any schedule changes during bad weather?
How often are teachers required to check their boxes? (one P insisted at every break)

Who do you call if you are sick? What is that phone number? Do you have to notify the princpal as well?

Regarding copies -- who do I contact when the machine jams and I can't unjam it or it stops working? What is that phone number?

How do I reach the prinicpal and assistant principal during the day? If they aren't available and it is an emergency, what do I do? Is there a "next in comnmand' person I should contact?

How many team meetings do we have per week?
    Where are the meetings located?
    Who is the department chair?
Will I have any students with 504 or IEPs?
    Where is the resource room?
    Is there a surplus/junk room?

Oh yeah, I know at my district, new teachers had to go through a training for attendance and grades. In case you aren't trained, you might want to ask, what are the grading/attendance procedures.

I wouldn't say those two were a hot topic, but many of the emails sent out were about how they were done incorrectly.

Not sure what you meant by grades, so I'll add to that: What sections are on the report card & how are they worded? (I've found this helps with my grade keeping).

Are progress reports required? If so, is there a certain format this must follow & when are they sent out?

    Another set of questions:

    Tell me about lesson plans:

What do you want me to include? (I've had to include benchmarks, objective, activity, modifications, & evaluation).

If I have any children with IEPs or 504s where is the IEP/504 located so I can review it? What are the children's goals?

Where are the permemant records for each child kept?

How often & where do I turn these plans in?

Where do I keep emergency sub plans?
