    Hi.

I am a K teacher and have been asked to sit in the interview for the other K position. I've never done this before. What questions should I ask? I don't feel comfortable with this.

Hmmm... take it easy on her. Think about grade level things... planning and work in collaborative groups. How does she feel about that. Interactions with different personalities is also major.

Are you sure you have to ask a question?

On the interviews I have sat in on the questions were already given to us.

I just interviewed for a position that the K teacher sat in on and she alternated asking questions from the set list with the P, but most importantly she smiled a lot and just made me feel comfortable. We did get a little side tracked and started chatting because we did have a lot in common teaching K. So it was nice. I think I would be most concerned with understanding his/her philosophy- what does she/he believe makes a great teacher? What does a great lesson look, sound, and feel like? Is there one area he/she feels particularly strong in- does she/he have a passion for teaching math? I think these are points of interest for me that I would want to know. I would also want to make her/him as comfortable as possible, too.

Tell us about classroom and behavior mgt

    How do you teach literacy

    How do you teach math

There are ---# members on the K team. How do you see yourself Working as a member of that team

What are some lessons/activities you are looking forward to teaching

What would someone see if they stopped by your classroom

How do you plan on communicating with parent

How would you utilize technology in your K classroom

What professional reading/ ideas leaves you with burning questions

What's the difference between a good and great teacher

How does play fit into an early childhood classroom

Oh I love interviewing! I went through so many to get a job in the first place I have fun with the shoe being on the other foot! ;)

What would they contribute to the school?

How do they differentiate for advanced/struggling kids?

What would they do if the team suggested something they disagreed with?

Give a management scenario-what would you do if a child....?

I love to ask what they are reading right now-I like when people are honest. We had an applicant once who reluctantly admitted she was reading a Harlequin romance novel-another member on the team has the same addiction-I knew they would hit it off.

Kinder- was she hired? I do not know if I could admit that in an interview! I don't read harlequin, but sometimes I do have a beach read type book going on and sometimes I have a hard time admitting that! lol

When I was job interviewing I make sure that I'm reading something besides my harlequins! (or maybe in addition)

So glad I found this post... My principal just emailed me asking me to do the same thing!!! I'm not sure if I have to ask questions or if I'm there to answer any questions the candidate might have about how we operate in kinder...

Yes, we hired her. I knew she would fit in on our team and pushed for that candidate-it ended up working really well. Now that's my lie detector question. ;) So many people have rehearsed pat answers-we liked that she was actually honest-if she was honest about that then she was probably honest when she told us how great she was.

I've been on a panel to interview someone who would become, essentially, my boss....and it was terrifying! I've also helped interview teammates and aides. I think you get a really good feel for a person by chatting with them prior to the formal interview...make her feel comfortable (or him!) and try to see if you have anything in common. It's easiest to work with people you really like!
