The next "Questions for Teachers" thread. Again, I have ALOT of questions so get those fingers ready to start typing.

    3. When do you usually go home?

    4. When was your MAP Testing? Please ignore this question if you do not do MAP Testing

    5. Have you ever been yelled at by another staff member?

    Critical Thinking

    7. High school Teachers only: Do you think high school students should be able to take off on their birthday? Why or why not?

    8. Should Corporal Punishment be banned or prohibited in the United states? Why or why not?

    Descriptive Writing

    9. If you could remove one school rule, what would it be and why?

9A. If you could remove a staff policy at your school, what would it be and why?

Good question...... this is the 9th thread on "questions for teachers." Each thread had about 10 questions (give or take a few)..... and each thread has about 10 people replying ... So ......... unless my math is really off ..... (and we've be celebrating a special event in the hot tub..... :p:p:p) ... that's about 900 replies..... with almost NO feedback or additional questions (about those replies) from the OP....

I would think there would be LOTS of interaction between the OP and those who respond ....... but I've seen none....

So Marcus can you give us some feedback or questions about the info you are receiving? Have a nice night........Thanks........:):)

    1. Do you go by a 10-month contract or a 12-month contract?
Neither. We're on a 185 day contract. If you're talking about pay, we're paid over 12 months, but we get our June, July, and August paychecks in one lump sum in June.

    2. When is your last day of school?
It should have been last Thursday (May 12), but we're going until June 1st to make up snow days.

    3. When do you usually go home?
    Anywhere between 3:30 and 4:30.

    4. When was your MAP Testing?
    We're doing it right now.

    5. Have you ever been yelled at by another staff member?
Only once. She only worked at our school for a few months. She was asked to resign. She has a lot of issues.

    6. What would you do if a student was disrespecting you and telling you to shut the F up?
I would have the student removed from my classroom. (I've never had a student do that, though.)

    7. High school Teachers only: Do you think high school students should be able to take off on their birthday? Why or why not?
I have middle school students who do that. I don't see the point in it. I think students (and teachers) need to be in school every day except for illness or emergency.

    8. Should Corporal Punishment be banned or prohibited in the United states? Why or why not?
I don't see that corporal punishment serves any purpose.

    9. If you could remove one school rule, what would it be and why?
I can't really think of one. We're not overly rule-bound.

9A. If you could remove a staff policy at your school, what would it be and why?
This is our first year with a dress code for staff, but the people who likely caused us to have a dress code in the first place aren't following the new one.

    10. What is the most difficult and/or frustrating things about teaching?
I get frustrated with all the "non-teaching" parts that take up too much time.

    11. Have you ever called security/safety/help from another staff member? Why?
I've sent for the principal a few times. Sometimes it was because I was sick. I've only called maybe twice for a student issue.

    12. What can you do to help school become a better place?
I just do the best job I can do.

    1. Do you go by a 10-month contract or a 12-month contract?
We're going into the last year of our 4-year contract. My pay is divided over 12 months, but we receive a lump sum at the end of June for the July and August pays.
    2. When is your last day of school?
The students finish June 29th, teachers on June 30th.
    3. When do you usually go home?
Anywhere between 3:15 (rare) and 5:00, depending on what is going on at home.

    4. When was your MAP Testing? Please ignore this question if you do not do MAP Testing

    5. Have you ever been yelled at by another staff member?
    No
    6. What would you do if a student was disrespecting you and telling you to shut the F up? The reason I said F is so you know what I'm talking about, not to swear
Notify the office that the student needed to be removed from the classroom. This has never happened to me--I have been called "dumb-a** teacher" by a student who walked out of the classroom and down to the office without my even having to ask him to. (He also asked to call home to tell his parents about it before the school could--he felt horrible!)
    Critical Thinking

    7. High school Teachers only: Do you think high school students should be able to take off on their birthday? Why or why not?
I'm not a high school teacher, but as the parent of a high school student, my answer is "no".
    8. Should Corporal Punishment be banned or prohibited in the United states? Why or why not?
    Yes (and in Canada)
    Descriptive Writing

    9. If you could remove one school rule, what would it be and why?
I don't think that there are any I feel are unimportant.
9A. If you could remove a staff policy at your school, what would it be and why?
We don't have a lot of "policies" for staff; I can't think of anything.

    Evaluating

    10. What is the most difficult and/or frustrating things about teaching?
Not being able to meet the needs of each student the way I would like to.
    11. Have you ever called security/safety/help from another staff member? Why?
    I've never had the need.

    Exordinary Writing

    12. What can you do to help school become a better place?
Continue to make my students the most important part of my job.

I think we all have to remember that each of those kids, no matter how aggravating, is the light of someone's life. We need to strive to see in each of our kids that special spark that his or her parents, best friends, and one true love all see or will see.

    1. Do you go by a 10-month contract or a 12-month contract?

N/A--I've been teaching at post-secondary for the last two years.

    2. When is your last day of school?

It already passed! I gave final exams last Saturday (May 14).

    3. When do you usually go home?

Depends on the day. On Mondays and Wednesdays, I'm at school until 5. I get to leave earlier on Fridays, and I don't teach on Tuesdays or Thursdays.

    4. When was your MAP Testing? Please ignore this question if you do not do MAP Testing

    N/A

    5. Have you ever been yelled at by another staff member?

    Thankfully, no.

    6. What would you do if a student was disrespecting you and telling you to shut the F up? The reason I said F is so you know what I'm talking about, not to swear

I would have someone escort the student to the principal's office. The profanity is what makes the difference, I think.

    Critical Thinking

    7. High school Teachers only: Do you think high school students should be able to take off on their birthday? Why or why not?

I don't think so. I don't stay out of work on my birthday, either.

    8. Should Corporal Punishment be banned or prohibited in the United states? Why or why not?

It should be prohibited in schools--regardless of one's stance on whether or not corporal punishment is acceptable at home, it's not the school's job to punish students in that manner. It seems very inappropriate. The district where I attended school still practices corporal punishment regularly.

    Descriptive Writing

    9. If you could remove one school
rule, what would it be and why?

I don't like rules that prohibit drinks (mainly water) in the classroom. While this policy doesn't exist everywhere, it's still worth noting the importance of staying hydrated during the day.

9A. If you could remove a staff policy at your school, what would it be and why?

We have a lot of freedom in my school. I really don't have any complaints.

    Evaluating

    10. What is the most difficult and/or frustrating things about teaching?

Not being able to use the restroom when you need to! Also, your job isn't over at the end of the day--even when you're at home with your family, you'll occasionally have papers to grade and lessons to plan. Also, so many politicians are attacking education and teachers' salaries as a waste of taxpayers' money, and it's very demoralizing. But despite all those things, teaching is a wonderful profession and well worth the difficulties.

    11. Have you ever called security/safety/help from another staff member? Why?

    Nope.

    Exordinary Writing

    12. What can you do to help school become a better place?

Encourage students who are struggling, and learn about my students--everyone needs to have someone who is interested in them and their success, both in and out of the classroom. I also want my classroom to be a stable place--some students never get to experience stability outside school walls, and I want my class to be a safe place.

When are classes over for you, Marcus? I bet you're looking forward to summer vacation.

Hey Marcus, do you have a school rule you would eliminate? That's an interesting question you asked. Why would you want that rule eliminated?

And another question, have you ever seen a student tell a teacher to shut the f up? What did the teacher do? Do you think other students should get involved? That can be a scary situation, I just wondered if it was common at your school. :)

    It's good.

Also, as long as you are answering the questions in a nice manner then you don't need additional questions. Beside, everytime I add additional questions nobody answers them.

I think the question is what are your reflections on the info you are gathering? On most threads featuring a start-off question, the OP seeks clarification, or comments on how the information is being of use to them...you are getting many answers to your questions...as teachers though, we like to know how information we impart is being utilized, how it changes a student's thinking, how new connections and understanding are being constructed.

    Thanks for the question.

If I could remove a school rule, it would have to be that teachers are NOT allowed to eat in their classrooms unless it is their lunch hour, if they are willing to let the students eat in their classrooms, or if they was having some sort of event that was taking place in the classroom; like a pizza party or a birthday party.

The reason you ask? It is because I'm sick and tired of seeing teachers eat sandwiches, cookies, ect and not allowing any of the students to eat their food because it's "their classroom" or "they're the teacher" or because "they don't get breaks" (Teachers have LUNCH BREAKS to eat in class). That's like saying that government are allowed to steal money from the bank because they run the country. So if you're one of the teachers who like to eat and drink in their class (except during Lunch hours or when you don't have a class), please rethink what you're doing.

As for the student telling a teacher to shut the F up, no. I have seen a student verbally tell a teacher to shut up, she called security and that student got a referral. But inversely, I've seen 3 teachers use the words "smarta*s" and "motherf--cker" (excuse the swear words please).

Also, if a teacher EVER tells me to shut the F up. I would go straight to the principal and demand that she be suspended, I don't give a crap if she writes me up or calls security.

Why do you get to ask all the questions? This is list #9 and members are curious about YOUR thoughts...that's how conversations go, and most threads here tend to be twisting, turning, evolving kinds of conversations.

As far as teachers eating in classrooms...often our lunch prep is taken up with paperwork, or parent phone calls, or writing referrals, or discourse with colleagues over one concern or another...we don't always have the luxury of sitting and eating, even with time scheduled for that purpose...the day of a teacher can sometimes take on a 'cells and bells' kind of timing...in class with the students, bell rings, fresh bunch comes in...no time to breathe or go to the restroom or do much other than get ready for the next group..and you're on! So yeah, sometimes we gulp our lunch remnants at our desk, or keep up our pace with a travel mug of coffee. That is the reality of just a small part of what teachers' days are like...if you can not appreciate that, I'm wondering just what you are gleaning from the vast amount of responses you are receiving to your queries...

Well, the answers are pretty nice. I do want to learn how to be a teacher (but this doesn't mean I will be a teacher), and I AM learning something.

Here is how these threads work and how I learn from the answers you give me:

I ask some questions based on what I've been wanting to know every since this school year's started. I'll ask up to 14 questions for you guys to answer. Then, I read the answers you gave me and based on what you give me, I learn different things about becoming an educator. But this doesn't mean I'll be an educator (with one of the reasons being that I'm uncomfortable having to talk to alot of kids), but this is just to learn the basics of teaching.

In a few minutes, I will launch "Questions for Teachers" #10: ASSESSMENT. It is not a test prep nor a review; it is a questionnaire based on what I've learned.

Later on this week, I will launch a thread listing all my feedback on the answers you have given me. Then next week, I will start the next unit of "Questions for Teachers".

I'll give you my feedback later this week in a seperate thread. Also, I don't get to ask all the questions, you can too.

Edit: Sorry, I want to get through at least 9 Questions for Teachers threads plus an assessment before I give you my feedback.

Also, if you don't like the idea of an assessment. Please be aware that this is part of teaching and I am only practicing it.

I'm sorry Marcus but I am the type of teacher to eat a snack in my classroom. I have diabetes and I need the snack during the class time to make it through the day. I don't think this rule or policy is ridiculous or unfair at all. There is a difference between teacher and student- not everything is fair or should be equal.

Marcus- do you really believe that a teacher would be suspended for telling you to STFU? That's extreme and highly unlikely. I don't think teachers should talk that way at all but you're response is unrealistic.

Why do we have to send you a private message? I'm not trying to be harsh but if you are allowed to ask us questions in threads then we should be able to do the same thing!

An assessment can be formative or summative...either way, it's to find out what students have learned...were we supposed to learn something from these questioning assignments?

I am starting to agree more and more with those who question your motive, intention, and identity.

Why are you trying to learn the basics of teaching? Especially, if you're not going to become a teacher? Why are you spending so much time during high school prepare questions to post on forums? What exactly do you mean by the words assessment and unit? Why are we being assessed? A lot of this doesn't make any sense.

No Marcus, I won't send a private message. I know you've said sometimes you have trouble understanding in certain situations. This is one.

Your response to cza was written in a very rude manner. It is not polite to say things like "here is how things work", unless you are an authority (and even then it's not really). Remember, you are ASKING for help. The way you are going about it is demanding.

Several people, myself included, have asked you questions with,
presumably, the same goal: to engage in conversation. You can learn a lot that way. Even if you think you can't. I know I learned a lot more about you from your response to me.

So I'm asking you nicely. Please think carefully about your words.

    This is well put kcjo.....

Marcus asks questions.... and a small group of very talented teachers answer each question..... But strangely enough Marcus doesn't bother to engage any meaningful conversation regarding ANY of the hundreds of replies that he gets.

And his reply to cza was rude...... but the small group who read "Questions for Teacher #99" will probably still answer each and every question....

Good luck Marcus.......... you just might be prime teacher material....:)

And I might add I hope "Questions of Teachers #10" will have something about high school football coaches...... because I always thought I would be one....... But that just didn't happen....

How about Marcus? Anything for coaches?.......... Thanks :)

Well, you don't know that. I MIGHT become a teacher assistant. But I specifically said that I will make these threads for your entertainment.

Like I said, I do not plan to test you, I do NOT plan to assess you. The "assessment" and "unit" is part of being a teacher, so why doesn't it make sense that I'm only practicing?

I don't understand HOW what I said was rude. So I can't explain how these threads work? And I've said this 3 stinking times, I'll tell you my feedback later.

I understand but there is also students who has diabetes and they need the snack during the class time to make it through the day.

Oh, so a teacher can say STFU and not get suspended for it but a student can? How illogical is that?

I was referring if you wanted to ask ME some questions so we wouldn't go off-topic.

Okay, I am a student, not an adult. I can't be as perfect as a teacher. If I'm going to accept criticism, I shouldn't have to repeat myself over and over again and then have to explain why I'm doing this.

I'm not a smart person. How in the world is explaining how these threads work is rude? Another thing, why do I have to repeat myself over and over again?

Sorry, people on here still don't get it.

The point of these threads are too get information based on your experience and for entertainment purposes.

The point in the assessment is to get final information about being a teacher.

And this is all part of teaching because if I become a teacher, I'll be able to assess students and test them. So I am just practicing.

Marcus, one of the reasons why you're encountering such resistance is because you're going against the grain of how an online forum works. It usually goes like this: You have one question/thought/comment that you post a thread about, and several people respond to you, and then you respond back, and hopefully you all walk away with more knowledge. Again, almost every thread revolves around one main idea.

What you're doing is posting periodic "survey" threads with ten or more questions at once, and seemingly trying to set up your own rules about how you want your threads handled. When someone tried to engage you in dialogue earlier, you told them to PM you. That's just not how a forum works. You don't get to set the rules, even in a thread you start.

I honestly think you'd be better served setting up a survey and maybe posting the link here. Check out www.surveymonkey.com.

I think we would all agree that a diabetic child would have a 504 plan which would allow them to eat a snack during class if necessary. That is a very specific situation which is different than an average stupid.

Teachers are adults who are protected by contracts. How students and teachers are treated is very differently. In my area, a student would not get suspended for saying STFU on a first offense. They would receive a detention. A teacher would probably be written up or something similar- due process.

Our questions for you are not off topic and we are allowed to ask them.

It's your tone, your word choice, etc that makes your responses rude.

Do you understand how this statement is rude? It's not friendly that's for darn sure.

Maybe the entertainment has worn off. This is the 9th thread of this.

LOL. I read two interaction posts between Marcus and other posters and literally said outloud "Marcus must be a high school student" and scrolled up to confirm my suspensions.
    :p

    1. Do you go by a 10-month contract or a 12-month contract?
In my district we're contracted by days. I'm on a 187 day contract. However, financially, my paycheck is stretched across 12 months

    2. When is your last day of school?
June 4th because I also have to work graduation

    3. When do you usually go home?
School lets out a 3:55. If I don't have anything to do I'm out by 4:10-4:15. But if I have a student who needs help or some task that needs to be done, I stay until we're done.

    4. When was your MAP Testing? Please ignore this question if you do not do MAP Testing

    5. Have you ever been yelled at by another staff member?
I once had an administrator yell at me in front of the parent volunteers in the middle of the front office because she was upset that I'd taken one of my alloted days off. She later sent me an e-mail admitting that she was wrong and that she shouldn't have yelled at me in front of everyone. It did kind of tick me off that she felt it was ok to rip me a new one in front of witness but then apologize in secret...

    6. What would you do if a student was disrespecting you and telling you to shut the F up? The reason I said F is so you know what I'm talking about, not to swear
In the immediate, that student would be removed from my class by the resource officer who is an officer that the city police department assigns to the school. In our district and f-bomb at a teacher is an automatic profanity ticket ($500 bucks) and a few days in ISS. In the long term I would look to see what was going on that it got so out of control and that student thought an f-bomb would fly with me.

    Critical Thinking

    7. High school Teachers only: Do you think high school students should be able to take off on their birthday? Why or why not?
I don't take off on my b-day, why should you? I appreciate wanting to celebrate the most significant day of your life, but why? All that's gonna happen is that you're going to come back and be behind with work missing. If you really just want to feel special, bring cupcakes to lunch or something. I can't imagine a worse b-day gift than a stack of make up work.

    8. Should Corporal Punishment be banned or prohibited in the United states? Why or why not?
I attended a private school where corporal was accepted as well as a public school in the late 90's where it was accepted (this is Texas after all). I don't think violence is the answer and sometimes you can get a lot further with words, but the fear of the paddle kept a lot of kids in line in the past. And it's not as though they were trying to maim us anyway. I'm sick of dealing with kids with a "I know my rights and you can't talk/ touch/ look/ breath in my general direction at me or my mama will sue". That's why the schools are so out of control. If I can't administer any type of discipline (and I'm not talking corporal. I don't want that type of power) without getting in trouble myself, how am I supposed to control my classroom? So no, but it should be used sparingly.

    Descriptive Writing

    9. If you could remove one school rule, what would it be and why?
We don't have any school rules I disagree with.

9A. If you could remove a staff policy at your school, what would it be and why?
The only rule I would remove doesn't effect students. It's a rule that locks the teachers out of the attendance system ten minutes after the bell, forcing us to do attendance in the first 10 minutes of class.

    Evaluating

    10. What is the most difficult and/or frustrating things about teaching?
How much blame we receive for things outside of our control

    11. Have you ever called security/safety/help from another staff member? Why?
    No

    Exordinary Writing

    12. What can you do to help school become a better place?

I'm not trying to set rules here. You didn't have to get so harsh because I told someone to PM me, you should've said it nicely or whatever.

I am getting sick and tired of people stopping me from posting what I want. If you didn't want these threads, then you should've said it nicely and kind instead of getting snippy and I would have just stopped making them.

I am also sick of people expecting me to be perfect on this forum.

Thanks Marcus for your reply.... I have a feeling you KNOW how these threads work. And the fact that you've said this "3 stinking times" also says a lot.

I'm anxious for your "feedback later."...... When can we expect it? Guess I would like to know if that's next week, next month or next year...... or perhaps after "Questions for Teachers #115..... Thanks marcus...:)

And just a suggestion for all of you who provide Marcus with "answers" why not ask him a question or two about his thoughts about your replies...What would it hurt? ... Maybe Marcus would engage in normal conversation and learn a lot more about becoming a teacher .. :):):)

    Peace to everyone.........

Thanks, Major. You must be the nicest teacher in the world.

I keep saying this over and over. I'll have feedback at the end of the week, but these guys still don't get it. I just don't have time to go back and look at the 180 replies you guys have given me.

Yes, it's maybe because you guys don't provide me with questions and I don't know what to say. I HAVE answered a few questions given by some users.

So it's best to ask me some questions when you're answering my questions.

    .

No one expects you to be perfect. They expect you to be cordial. And some of what you say comes off very brusquely as well as extremely defensive which rubs people the wrong way. I honestly don't think it's what you're saying, but rather how you're saying it that is causing the friction. Remember, you'll get more flies with honey than vinegar. So:

    -Don't tell; Ask
-Please and thank you never hurt
-Answering a question with a question will always irritate people (Ex: Q: Why are you being rude? A: How is that rude?)

And that goes for both sides.

PS The phrase "I'm getting sick and tired of..." will NEVER solve a situation. It will ALWAYS make it worse. ;)
