If any of you can answer these for me, I'd be very grateful! I'll be teaching 2nd grade in the inner city of Miami next year, and I have a few questions. Okay, more than a few.;)

No recess for grades 2 and up- can I have a structured outdoor activity as a reward for the last ten minutes of the day for those who earned it? I use recess an incentive for both behavior and homework.

Do the kids have PE everyday for 30 minutes and art once a week for an hour? Do they get music, library, or computer instruction by a specialist or am I required to teach those subjects?

Which subjects will I be teaching and approx. how much time is allotted for each one?

Will I be doing small groups for reading, and if so, how long should each rotation last?

Is there a requirement for DEAR or SSR time, and if so, how long?

Can I get reimbursed for classroom supplies?

Am I limited on photocopies, lamination, or other school supplies?

What do I do if a child has no pencils, paper, crayons, etc. because the family cannot afford them?

What themes/topics does second grade use (dinosaurs, weather, etc.) so I can gather resources? Do the curric. companies have info online where I can access this in more detail?

Is there a school-wide discipline plan that all teachers follow, or is it left up to the individual?

Do second graders get letter grades on report cards or use another system?

    How often are teachers observed?

Can I teach outdoors when the lesson is appropriate and the weather is good?

Is there a dress code for teachers?

When is the soonest I can access my classroom to begin setting it up?

Thank you!!!! I know a lot of the answers will depend on my particular school, but just reading about your experiences will help me.

I teach in Polk County--FL, but I can take a stab at some of your questions.

No recess for grades 2 and up- can I have a structured outdoor activity as a reward for the last ten minutes of the day for those who earned it? I use recess an incentive for both behavior and homework. I would think it would depend on the school, I hear of most people doing “free” time in the classroom.

Do the kids have PE everyday for 30 minutes and art once a week for an hour? Do they get music, library, or computer instruction by a specialist or am I required to teach those subjects? We have 45 block at my school, PE 3 times a week, Music once, and Art once. Most schools have a P.E. program, but not always Music and Art. I would think that all schools have library. School in our distric have computer labs as well as computers in the classroom—but I think Polk is technology advanced of some areas.

Which subjects will I be teaching and approx. how much time is allotted for each one? The only time restraints that we have at my school is an hour and half reading block daily.

Can I get reimbursed for classroom supplies?Generally you are given a budget at the beginning of the year. Any other items are up to you. Keep your receipts though—you can take it off your taxes.

Am I limited on photocopies, lamination, or other school supplies? At my school, photocopies and lamination come out of your classroom $ allotment, but other schools there really isn’t a limit. It is all how the individual principals budget their school money.

What do I do if a child has no pencils, paper, crayons, etc. because the family cannot afford them?I usually spend much of my classroom $ on these items and I don’t ask for the parents to contribute much, because I to teach in a low-economic area—but usually there is someone at your school who will know resources to help in special situations.

Is there a school-wide discipline plan that all teachers follow, or is it left up to the individual? There are generally district wide policy and the school may have specific expectations, but classroom policies are left up to the individual teacher.

Do second graders get letter grades on report cards or use another system? Letter Grades

How often are teachers observed? Since you are a new teacher to the state, you may have to go through a beginning teacher orientation. In this you would be observed several times. Otherwise, it is usually just once “officially”. All though, many principals are in and out of classrooms.

Can I teach outdoors when the lesson is appropriate and the weather is good? I would think so, but check with your school.

Is there a dress code for teachers? Most of the time, it is just “appropriate attire for your job”. In my district the principal sets the expecations.

When is the soonest I can access my classroom to begin setting it up?Call and check with your school. Usually you can get in as soon as it has been cleaned by the custodial staff.

    the move

Do the kids have PE everyday for 30 minutes and art once a week for an hour? Do they get music, library, or computer instruction by a specialist or am I required to teach those subjects?
Special areas such as pe, spanish, art are up to each school, it varies. It is so awesome if they have that thirty minute pe slot, then NO recess, at least you know they are getting energy released!
I have had to monitor the computer lab and other times it was duty free, planning time. Same as Library, the media specialist took over...My kids go to a school with Science Lab taught by the science teacher, not their teacher!

Which subjects will I be teaching and approx. how much time is allotted for each one? As for time allotments i think its : 45 mathematics, 90 minutes reading language arts.
if you arent team teaching, rotating, or departmentalizing, then you teach all the content area. If you are Kindergarten, they dont usually get added into budget for the special area teachers at some schools.

Will I be doing small groups for reading, and if so, how long should each rotation last? Think of a child's attention span. 30 minutes is plenty.
Is there a requirement for DEAR or SSR time, and if so, how long?
DEAR is usually 15 minutes and up to 30 minutes!
Can I get reimbursed for classroom supplies? Sometimes there is a $200 reimbursement policy, you need to find out if its paid from the PTA, or if its from TAX deductions... Sometimes there is no budget.

Am I limited on photocopies, lamination, or other school supplies?
Some schools require you to submit everything that needs to be photocopied, which then gets clearance and then the copying person is the one to do it for you. As for laminating, same thing... its left for someone to do for you. School supplies have been where you ask and its put in your box if you fill out the order form. Some schools you are required to do your own copying using school's paper or your own has to be provided!

What do I do if a child has no pencils, paper, crayons, etc. because the family cannot afford them? Keep a stash available or create a sponsorship family who will provide for a monthly stash of lined paper and pencils. Usually these parents provide one month of the ten but you will find them so willing to be supportive that you can rely on them for all of the year.

What themes/topics does second grade use (dinosaurs, weather, etc.) so I can gather resources? Do the curric. companies have info online where I can access this in more detail? SUNSHINE STATE STANDARDS!!! you must look on line for the Florida sunshine state standards for your grade level. In fact its grouped as K-2 and 3-5 with the same standards. I will send you the web address later but you must do your lesson plans with the standard in it so before you get started stare and comit to memory the scope and sequence of the year based on the standards AND the fact that you need to have these standards met before April testing!!

Is there a school-wide discipline plan that all teachers follow, or is it left up to the individual? varies. DONT follow the one teacher who has a stick with tape balled up on it. Try stop light or canters assertive discipline etc.. REWARD with points and then fridays a trip to BUY using the points from treasure box.

Do second graders get letter grades on report cards or use another system? YES (a-f)

How often are teachers observed? Beginning teacher program for the county might require several observations (even though you are teaching for many years) The county has different requirements. ex. Broward has a ninety day probationary period. I think there is one or TWO observations per year but not certain.

Can I teach outdoors when the lesson is appropriate and the weather is good? I know where you will be at and you may want to scope out the area for that, sounds like fun but not so safe!

Is there a dress code for teachers? schools vary. I think professional dress but also some schools had us wearing uniforms also!

When is the soonest I can access my classroom to begin setting it up? There are schools open for summer with twelve month employees there. You can access easily then but coordinate with the travel plans of the twelve monthers. Most schools are NOT running summer programs!

I substituted in Palm Beach County this school year, and in this county it depended on the school/teacher whether 2nd graders had recess...you can always do inside recess.
As for the other questions you have, the answers would vary depending on your school. If you already know where you will be teaching, I would contact the school.
As for themes...check out this website or abcteach for ideas.

I hope that I was of some help.
