Currently I'm getting recertified to teach and I am really questioning my choice becoming a teacher years ago. I now have kids of my own and when I intellectually think about it, it seems sort of crazy now. Maintain an entire classroom and balance a family life/home for my own children. Maybe I'm overthinking this and it'll just sort of work out? Besides the financial aspect, why wasn't this forewarned to us when we were all young and single and trying to save the world by becoming teachers?
I don't personally have kids, but people with kids do it (teach) every day! Where I work, Most of those with younger kids leave fairly quickly after school - a lot of times they will work from home at night getting assignments ready, etc. Others who have a different spouse situation prefer to stay late and get it all done while at work. I think people just figure out what works best for them. Also, I'm in a union state, so for many in the public sector it does make financial sense to work/stay working with kids. Best of luck with your decision!
I would have NEVER been able to be a good school teacher AND also give my children the time, attention, love, and patience that they deserved and demanded. My children are all grown now, with children of their own, and only NOW, am I able to fully devote my attention to the ministry of teaching. I can give it my all! Don't have to rush home; I can arrive early--stay late; no problem! My time and responsibilities are not fragmented into home, school, and soccer practice; it's all one now. I retired in 2020 when COVID broke-out, but I'm preparing to return, and I THOROUGHLY look forward to it. You have to make the best decision that's right for you and the welfare of your children. Good luck!
