I enjoy buying myself a new professional development book a month. I'm currently subbing and it makes me feel like I'm staying on top of things and preparing for my first year teaching. I've read: Readicide by Kelly Gallagher Teaching the Neglected "R" by Thomas Newkirk Write Beside Them by Penny Kittle The English Teacher's Survival Guide by Mary Lou Brandvik Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott The Lesson Planning Handbook by Peter Brunn *This Time It's Personal by John S. O'Connor Room 109 by Richard Kent *Assessing Writers by Carl Anderson *The Common Core Companion (9-12) by Jim Burke Letters to a New Teacher by Jim Burke Mindful Teaching by Deborah Schoeberlein I'm really looking for books with practical applications for teaching writing and reading in middle or high school. Any with *'s beside them! I found helpful and would recommend. I'm interested in learning more about incorporating technology, flipping the classroom, differentiation, project based assessment, multi genre portfolios, etc.
