As some of you may know that after 33 years as a "Shop" teacher my Principal was going to move me to Math ( I am certified in Math too) Well today the Assistant Principal told me that they now have a teacher who could teach the math class (hired as a science teacher) and if they get a science teacher. and then I go back to the Shop.
They will have to open the shop back up return the machines to the room and order the supplies it will give the students back a elective that they enjoy. part of me want to just cuss the Principal out! (The venting thread is looking good now) I held off taking my shop "apart" because I thought this may happen but I finally did this week!.
It was funny how the Assistant Principal told me he asked me "Did you take the math class you said you might take?" When I said "not yet" (it is a 3 week online course) he kind of gave a sigh of relief.
Any science teachers out there?:woot:
When I become King heads will Roll  :help:

    Part 2

I had my room all set up, 5 TVs to show videos , or Power point off the computer (I scrounged them most had broken knobs so setting them on Ch 3 or 4 was all that could be done ), a flashing red light for clean up time, a small refrigerator for my lunch and water throughout the day, Door alarm on the outside door, and right next to the bathroom (we over 50 appreciate nearby bathrooms)

I know what you mean Dave.

We're reaching the point in the summer where, each time the phone rings, I pause a second to see whether or not it's school calling. Many many summers I've received a phone call changing my preps. (although never as drastic a change as the one you're talking about.)

What are you HOPING for (aside from being annoyed at the switch)?? I get the impression that you love teaching shop.

    And when does school start?

I love to teach it is kids that bother me
I am about 60-40 leaning towards shop

I also found out that if I am still in Math
    my classes will be.

    Period 1 8th grade math
    Period 2 8th Algebra
    Period 3 8th grade math
    Period 4 Lunch
    Period 5 8th Algebra
    Period 6 Planning
    Period 7 8th grade math
    Period 8 Honors Algebra

I would have liked to have the math classes together and the Algebra classes together
I like having Honors Algebra at the end of the day "save the best for last"

Teachers start Aug 16 students Aug 20

It is also funny we have 2 8th grade teams Team A no one wants to be team leader
My Team (Team B) there are 2 of us who want to be team leader.

My school lost 4 of 6 science teachers
4 of 10 6th grade teachers (all on one team)
we have 12 openings (hopefuly we will have a full staff on Aug 20)

    Ouch!!!!

So you could end up teaching just about anything, depending on who they hire.

It's like my experience last year:

Hired back to my old school after 6 years as a SAHM. Teaching 7th graders after a career of mostly Juniors and Seniors.

Three women in my department go out on maternity leave at the same time. They find subs for #1, we cover #2 internally, and then there's #3: Precalculus and SAT prep. Kind of hard to find someone off the street willing (and able) to walk into a class of Seniors midyear and mid-chapter.

So they asked me and I jumped at the chance. (It's a WHOLE lot easier to find someone to cover 7th grade math.)

I know there was some talk in the faculty room from the teachers who had been there 3 or 4 years (and who didn't have me themselves in HS)-- "Why on EARTH would they bump a 7th grade teacher up to Seniors... she'll be eaten alive" kind of stuff.

Needless to say, it didn't happen. I loved the Seniors and they loved me... it was a great 2 months.

Whenever anyone asks me what I'm teaching, I respond with "Well, as of now..."

Too funny!!! And, unless school starts August 1st, there's always the chance that they'll change it again.

I got a phone call today from school and started to laugh, thinking my preps had been changed. (They hadn't just the dates of some meetings.)

So if today was the first day of school, did administrators come to you after 1st period and said "Where were you? You are suppose to be teaching shop. Did anyone tell you this morning?" Any luck of that? :haha:

How were your math classes today? Did you find your key?

They gave me a key to the next room, I can go through it to get to my Room. Open House is Wed so I have to "Do" my room, one bulletin board is ripped so I need to get some fabric to cover it and the checking account is empty!

    Oh my goodness!

 I would be furious! I teach at a very small school, and I teach all subjects to all the fifth through eighth graders. I am switching off on one subject, the high school teacher is going to tackle history with my kids while I tackle math with hers, but other than that, it is all me. Don't get me wrong, I love it! But it is very challenging, I am buried in lesson planning, and we do not start (students) til Sept 4! I can not imagine what it would be like not knowing what I was going to be teaching this late in the game. You are in my prayers! Good luck, and don't kill anyone.

Good heavens! You poor thing! You must be one flexible guy. I realize there is math involved in teaching shop, and you are certified in it, but to just jump into it at the last minute..... I am certified in Social Studies, but I have not taught Ancient Civ in over 25 years. If they told me that I had to teach it at the last minute I would be, like teacherkenny, furious. And then to lose the key?

Re: your BB, go to a thrift shop like goodwill. They often have fabric people have bought, never used, and donated. You could also speak to the manager of a fabric shop and ask for a donation. They might have some fabric that they can't move and may be willing to donate it. Of course it may be pretty ugly.....

Ugly fabric might be a great attention getter on the first day!

Besides Goodwill, you can look at megastores like WalMart. I did get a whole slew of fabric there for a dollar per yard. It was super cute, and I could have paid for it with the contents of my piggy bank if necessary.

Wife Pushed an expense voucher she was due at her work, and deposited the money so I went to Wal-mart (clearance $1 and $2 yd) most of the fabric was Foo Foo (girlie, heavens forbid) or bland, But I met a teacher friend, who along with her husband I used to work with, suggested a plaid (School colors) and since my school's mascot is the Cobra I also got a snake skin Fabric
