I have an interview for a 4th grade teaching position at a local Catholic school. Are there any tips or anything in particular you think I should know or you have experienced during a Catholic school interview that's different from a public school interview? PS--I AM a confirmed Catholic, but I only go to church for weddings and funerals and hated CCD! Lol. How the heck do I turn my lack of religious practice into a positive?!!
in each of my interviews at Catholic schools (I had 3) they asked me what my Catholic faith meant to me, if I was a practicing Catholic, and why i wanted to teach in a Catholic school. I would just be prepared to answer those questions as truthfully as possible without mentioning that you don't go to church and hated CCD haha. Even if its not specifically mentioning how the Catholic faith has shaped you as a person, but faith in general. hope that helps! Good luck!
I have been on two Catholic school interviews so far. The first was for a kindergarten teacher position and the principal asked me if I would be okay teaching religion. The second was for junior high math and the questions were similar to those asked at public school interviews. Religion was briefly discussed at both interviews because I brought up how I feel strongly about the Catholic faith and Catholic education. I would suggest thinking about why you want to teach in a religious environment and the positive impact faith has had on your life. Good luck on your interview!
I actually have an interview at a Catholic School this Monday. I interviewed with a Catholic High School a few years ago and I was asked what the Catholic faith meant to me and why I wanted to teach in a Catholic School. I was able to bring up the fact that I went to Catholic School almost my whole life and I loved it for A, B, C reasons. I would definitely be prepared to answer any questions related to why you believe in a Catholic education and why religion is important to you. Good Luck!!
I interviewed at 3 Catholic schools all for MS Science. The most religious question I got was basically what I had to offer as a Religion Teacher. Don't stress out about it, but I wouldn't flaunt that you don't go to church. They will not quiz you in the room and the Teachers Edition has all the answers in it when you actual get the job and start teaching.
Thanks for the advice, everyone! I went on the interview today. It was the easiest teaching interview I've ever been on, and she didn't even question me about my faith (maybe because I am a Catholic and it said it on the app?) But ANYWAY, I was beyond insulted (secretly) when she told me the starting salary: $18,500!!!!!! WHAT???? That is poverty level! I knew Catholic schools paid less, but that is not even fathomable! As soon as she told me the starting salary, I stopped taking the interview seriously.
I'm sorry to hear that the position didn't pay as much as you hoped it would. I once went on an interview at a non-denominational private school where the salary was $18,000. The Catholic schools I am currently applying to pay about $20,000 less than the public schools. I hope you're able to land another interview soon.

Where do you sub? Not location but I never heard of a sub making that much. If you can do it by all means go for it. I never made more than 5,000 a year in NJ.
But you've worked every day of the school year? $115 x 180 days is $20,700 before taxes. That is if you work EVERY day.

True. I swapped classrooms with another teacher today so I moved two entire classrooms. I just returned from bowling a 3 game series. It's been a long day.
You have another thread devoted to how insulted you were at the pay, and I commented there. Since you have the very same post here, I'll comment here as well. Many of us have chosen to base our careers on that salary, in that environment, because we truly believe in what we are doing. If it wasn't a good fit for you, then it's a good thing you stopped taking the interview seriously. There was probably at least one candidate that was a much better fit on the principal's list, and they will likely be thrilled to take the job, complete with the salary and the religious component.
I also make 115 a day where I sub and i ended up with a long term sub for 8 weeks and I made around 8500.00. I only know this because i figured it out because i too have an interview at a catholic school tomorrow and they start out around 25k. I guess at this point it is better than nothing and I will make more than i did subbing last year. I guess if you worked every single day you could make around 16k in a school year. Reality is we don't. So i guess i would take classroom experience over pay if it meant doing what i love to do and that is teach.
Oh year before last i made 40k working at a public school so that is a lot more than catholic schools.
It depends what state. I know many Catholic school teachers here who make almost as much as public school teachers and get better benefits.
No need to get snarky. Not everyone can afford to live on that salary. You obviously have to have another source of income in order to survive on that. I don't think the OP meant any disrespect to Catholic schools. It is just not necessary to make the mean comment that you did about someone else being a better fit. You don't know that and besides, this was about salary.
