How are you teaching your 2nd graders prefixes and suffixes?

The best advice I can give is to never teach them together. Teach prefixes earlier in the year, until the kids get them down, and then go to suffixes (or vice versa.) Otherwise they get confused.

you can help them know the difference by telling them prefixes come before the word, suffixes after the word, just like in the alphabet p comes before s or s comes after p

I use an elephant to teach affixes.

The body is the base word.

The nose is the prefix. I call it a pretty nose (I draw a bow on the picture) and it starts with a p so the kids can remember prefix better.

The tail is the suffix. I put a bow on the tail also and call it the silly tail so the kids remember the suffix comes at the end.

I just draw the elephant on the white board for my lessons. I usually only introduce one affix at a time and spend time talking about the meaning. After we have been working with the concept for a couple of days, the kids usually ask if they can draw their own elephants so we make little "dictionaries" using our new words.

After a few lessons when we are working with words like carefully, I would draw an elephant without a nose and two tails.

My kids are great at figuring out the meaning of words with affixes, so even though it's silly to teach it this way, it works!

Teacherintexas, I used this idea and it worked GREAT! They loved the elephant idea and found it easy to remember the prefix went on the pretty trunk. THANK YOU for the idea! I was really struggling with this one!
