In North Carolina I am required to take the 0542 Praxis exam in order to be a TOR (teacher of record) for students with mild to moderate disabilities. In looking at the website; I see a few simple sample questions and also see that I would be allowed 1 hour to answer 5 constructed response questions. I plan to get the CliffsNotes study guide (as it is rated fairly high among users as far as relativity and helpfulness). If someone would please provide some input in regards to other questions or types of questions that you may recall in taking the 0542. I appreciate any input. Thanks!!
I just bought the book from their website for this, but its mostly just general knowledge about what you would do in special ed. It wasn't too hard, I passed on the first try. It is kinda hard to study for since you don't really know what exactly what topic your questions will be on.
momto2zs- Do you recall what "type" of questions i.e. (laws, IEP's, defining different types of disabilities)? Thanks
Hey - I just found out I have to take the 0542 test for SC certification. What fun this will be. I have th Cliff Notes book which I use to help me pass 0353 - the book covers 0353, 0383, 0542 & 0544. I hope this helps!!
I just took it and I can't give you specific questions, but I can tell you to know your broad themes and know at least 2 things to do in any situation, like what mods would you make for a child who. . . You should know how to write an IEP goal backwards and forwards, as well as the benchmarks. The format of the questions is very similar to the cliffsnotes questions. Be sure to study up on stuff like transition planning. No one really had time to finish, and I would recommend going thru all the questions first and jotting down notes, then write your anwers in list format with a bare minimum of detail. If you have time, you can go back and add on, so leave a few lines after each part of the question. And of course you'll answer all parts-- that said, I'm not a bit sure I passed so I'm pretending that I didn't and I'll keep studying. It felt like better than 90% for the Core Knowledge exam though.
I missed this thread when it first appeared... but it properly belongs here. Please note that the WARNING at the top of this and all Examinations for Teachers threads is something to take seriously: the test companies disapprove of people publicizing specific actual test questions, and let's just say that they have ways of making their disapproval felt. With that said, let me emphasize that there's nothing wrong with speculating about topics that are likely to be asked about.
