    Hello all--
I just took Praxis 5038-Secondary English and got a 165 raw score. Does anyone have any thoughts about me passing or failing the test?

I took the test in Virginia and the passing score is 167.

    Can anyone help?

Your thread has been moved to the Single Subject Tests subforum (VCLA, for one, is a basic-skills test). There's at least one other thread on 5038, not to mention various threads on other states' English-teacher tests.

Your 165 is almost certainly not a raw score, but rather an unofficial scaled score. (The raw score on a test like this is the actual number of correct answers, minus the questions that don't count; not many Praxis tests feature enough questions for 165 to be plausible as a raw score. The scaled score, on a scale from 100 to 200, is what results when the raw score is run through a kind of statistical wringer.)

The bad news for you is that, in the absence of a constructed response component that requires human intervention, official scaled scores scores rarely go up. Hugs.

The good news is that you came darned close to passing. Do you have a better sense now of how the test works? Do you have a sense of the domains or test areas in which you might have come up a bit short? (You may have some idea now, but do also pay attention to the official score report, which should break your raw score down by domain; that can be helpful information.)

You were close, but you did not pass, unfortunately. Raw scores very rarely change when scaled. The good news is that you can probably remember what questions you saw, so if I were you I would write down as much as I could remember and study those concepts I found difficult on the test. I’ve heard from other posters on here that sometimes questions get repeated so you might luck out next time.

    Good luck studying!

As everyone said you were close. I am in the same boat. I got my PRAXIS multiple subject test back and barely passed the history portion. All my scores stayed the same from when I got my raw score.

Hello I am new to the board. I will be registering to take the praxis II 5038 (ELA Content Knowledge). I have been trying to prepare for it. If anyone has any useful information or tips to help ease the stress of this test please help me out. At times i feel lost when taking the practice test.

I don’t know if I will be of any help. I myself have not been able to pass the test for the past 5 times...and I am taking it again!
Good luck to you and me!

I tried to study that but the constructed response threw my confidence off

Isn't there a constructed response on 5038 as well?

What bothers you about constructed responses?

I'm studying for the 5038 and would like to drum up more responses and conversations. Anyone pass it and would like to give advice? Anyone studying now to take it and what materials are you using? Anyone failed it and have advice...thanks!

I studied for the Praxis 5038 for about two weeks using this book:

Praxis II English Language Arts Content Knowledge 5038 Study Guide 2019-2020: Test Prep and Practice Test Questions for the Praxis English Language Arts (ELA) Exam
    Paperback: 226 pages
Publisher: Cirrus Test Prep (April 29, 2019)
    Language: English
    ISBN-10: 1635304563
    ISBN-13: 978-1635304565

Edit: I forgot to mention, I also watched this entire YouTube playlist:
    https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLpp0LGbFCk1EvZUeltoV1ZA3O6PO1z4Tf

I also took a couple Quizlets.

Sat for the exam on Oct 12, 2019. The unofficial score on the computer screen was 171. Just got the final score today (Oct 15, 2019) and it matches the unofficial: 171. A passing score for VA is 164, so I'm good.

Went in feeling 50/50 on this test. I took the Form 3 practice exam from ETS and got 99 correct and 31 incorrect. I'm coming from a totally different background and haven't been in class for a long time.

I only had about 5 minutes left by the end of it when I hit submit. I have a lot more content I want to catch up with, but at least I beat the testing window.

    Hopefully that helps someone.
