Well I had my interview for the 5th grade position today. It went very well and I was way more prepared than I have ever been. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and now I have to just wait to find out if I got it. I saw 2 other candidates that had interviews one before and one after me and they both looked about 30ish. I'm assuming that means they have more experience than me but I'm hoping I won the principal over!

Did I mention I would love to live at the beach?! :2up:

Well, I am praying that you get the position nikki. Though if you do, I'll have to be mad at you for like a second because 1) its for 5th grade which is the grade I want to teach and 2) its close to the beach. But I would be estactic for you after the second was over.

Just because they looked to be in the 30s does not mean they have experience. My sister is 34 and is only in her second year. And there were several students in my college classes that were in their 30s and 40s.

I was always leery of online apps & processes only because a lot of times when you do things online they don't check them often. I've had a couple of places not know that I applied online-or emailed them (even though they posted online and left email addresses). I don't know..

But I know a lot of places do check them as well. Most of my interviews were from emails (craigslist was a GREAT help). So i guess it depends on the company.

I have contacted someone in the school so I know that the principal has my application in hand. I'm leery of the online process as well. That's why I always, always email the principal directly.

    racist illegal question!!!

    Happy Monday!

New month, same garbage in this racist town!

I am just apalled and filled with outrage at the injustice I experienced today!

I went to a very nice school district. and this is what I got:

"Have you worked with children before?"

(ok, I see you did not read my cover letter or resume)

Yes, I have been an aide, sub and teacher.

"How can I put this...Do you have a concern with working in a predominantly white school?"

(did she just say that???)

Actually, I have worked in Hispanic, Armenian, Asian and yes I have been the only Black person in several districts. In fact, I am the only black person who just moved into an all white condo!!! But don't you think WE as educators should be in the forefront in this day an age in promoting racially equality???

"Yes, of course, uh..wow...you should go back to school and get your teaching certificate."

I have my teaching certificate, and I am awaiting approval for my special education endorsement. (no you really did not read my cover letter or resume, did you)

    (stupid look on her face...)

"Oh, may I see your resume."

Sure, you may have a copy, in fact I also am NCLB-qualified for paraeducator and special ed aide and teacher.

"Why do you want to go back to being an aide...having all this experience."

My family is my priority at this time, and I would like to continue working with children without the full time responsibilities of teaching.
(I think Ms.Friz gave me that one!)

"Welll, you are my first interview, and uh...I do have someone inhouse who also wants the position. You know, it only pays $10.88 an hour, and subs make so much more."

    sigh...

we walked around, she showed me off. I DID see some black kids. Ok, I could count them on one hand, but no other staff members of any color. I mean ANY color. I could see quite a few Arab families and Hispanic families. Hmmmm.

I tell you guys, I am on my way to my night class...but it looks like it will be a long winter for me.

Still no phone calls from 1st job, or interview thursday.

will check back soon. hope the rest of you had better luck!

Sorry to hear about your experience Master PreK. It just seems that for some of us there is always someone else they have in mind instead of us. Why did she interview you if she knows who she wants already? That is such a waste of our time. Even though we have a lot we still don't want to waste it going to interviews when we know we won't geta job!!!! :| I know this is a stupid question, but why don't you want to sub for that district? Are you like me, just plain doggone tired of subbing? I know subbing worked for me when I was raising a family, but now that is why I don't have a job!!!!:( Best wishes and hugs! to you!:hugs:

I moved 3.5 hours away from home for a job and I just received an e-mail from the city I moved from asking me to come in for an interview :(. It reminds me of guys -- they aren't interested until they see you with someone else.

Oh well, there is a sp. education position open in Canada .

    Master Pre-K,

I'm sorry to hear of your experience!!!! A question for you.....if they offered you the job, would you still take it (based on their racist question)? Torn between eating and what's right......tough call.

    PO'd AGAIN

    Ok.

I am sick and tired (like all of you, I'm sure) of submitting resumes, calling schools, begging for an interview, only to be told the positions have been filled. ARGH!!!! I am a highly qualified, experienced teacher with so much to offer. (That's what they tell me on my rejection letters!!!) So what's the problem???

I just needed to vent, thanks for listening. :thanks:

BTW.....I have an interview tomorrow for a job I don't really want that is too far to drive to. But, you gotta do whatcha gotta do......wish me luck?

I agree, what's the point in interviewing if they know they have someone else? I actually asked one place over the summer how soon they would be making a decision & how many other applicants there were (this was before my interview). And she told me, well we've already interviewed someone else, but we like to have options. LOL@ proud2b-just like a guy again. Don't wanna make a decision until they see you up against someone "worse" or "better". That is a HORRIBLE!! thing to do.. Let me think they're going to give me a position and they just want to juggle. Although they did call me like 2 days after school started asking me if i was still available. I told them yes, she asked for my number (via email) and yet I NEVER heard from her again. Ah well, wasn't meant to be.

But like you all, I just don't get it. If you need somebody, what are you waiting for?

And master- why'd she call you for an interview and how did she know she wanted to interview you-if she OBVIOUSLY didn't read your paperwork? Like, she just said, hey a warm body, let's call her and see what she has?

WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE!?!!?!? HOW THE HE-- DO THEY HAVE JOBS AND YOU ALL DON'T!!!!!! Like, are you all convicted felons and you just aren't telling me something? Cuz i don't have a cert, i'm getting an emergency one, and i found a job sooner than like 5 of you who have certs and a couple who also have MASTER'S. So,

    what gives?

I know I have a job (now) but once upon a time i didn't and i was in your shoes. And to newcomers or maybe even some oldtimers it may seem like i have nothing to complain about or that maybe i'm being facetious or something being po'd with you all-but over this past month and a half, i've come to feel as though you all are real friends. you all have heard my frustrations and concerns and problems and prayed and everything-and i really feel like i know you all and are close to you all. and i'm really appreciative of it.

and i'm really frustrated and kinda upset that you all are still searching and interviewing in october! like, what the heck!?!? it's not the summer, they don't have time to dilly-dally..

Proud, loved the guy analogy. You said there was a sped position in cananda. Are you going back to GA then?

MPK, like I said in the other thread, I'm sorry to hear they treated you this way.

mstemple, we have become great friends. And when one of us gets a job, its like a small victory for us all.

    Daysy, no calls here either.

Turtle, I know the job is still open, but still no call for an interview, offer, we don't want you.

So I'm in the same boat as you guys. Ugh I've waited a week today to hear about a 5th grade position. Why don't they tell you one way or the other? I just assumed at this point I don't have it. They didn't even send a letter and told me I would hear with in a few days at the interview. I did what was right on my part sent thank you note etc. Waaaa. I hate this before and after school care job. I want to teach not babysit!

MPK: Sorry to hear that things aren't going well.

Daisy and all those waiting We can't lose hope. I might consider moving again!!!

Be thankful! It can get heated in the other threads. At least I know that in this thread, no one is going to get offended by something that was said, nor will they offend me. We all respect each other and the situations that we're currently in.

    You guys rock!!

PenCelia, I've been waiting to hear something for 2 weeks now. Not results from an interview, to GET the interview. I know that the job is still available, the P has my app in hand, but hasn't set up ANY interviews yet.

I've never been given a letter, just a phone call saying they picked someone with more experience.

Moving is not an option for me. :(

it's a little out of my way teach123. actually, to be an aide or paraeducator as they call them, I would make less, but I would have insurance and a permanent job. If she is any indication of the rest of the district, I don't want to waste anymore time with them.

yeah, based on the fact I am still waiting on that 2nd check from the other job!

    what are these people thinking?

If they hire me, I would be humbling myself to be the token Negro. I can say that, because it was the old term.

I do want to eat. Who knows, she was impressed when I tossed around terms like cross-categorial, and PECS picture exchange for autistic children. her dingbat teachers were having kids paint in the gym using rustoleum paint! she almost passed out. and said, we must open the door. I went with her and opened a door too.

Hey, I should get paid for that!

yeah and we may just have the highest sales tax in the country 11% starting in Jan. :help:

I can't even think that hard! ok, when it was 5% back when I was in high school, that was easy. something cost a $1 add a nickel.

sigh...hope you don't have to burn alot of gas!! if you are single, you should at least get insurance free. has to balance out

    11% sales tax

and if that wasn't enough...I just heard on the news...

our county sales tax is going up to 11%

that is the highest in the US!

I am going to start collecting bottles and cans.

I walked to school tonight. I will find out about recycling. walk more and start beating the bushes for bottles.

    sigh...

I think I am getting tired of tuna!

omg...get online or call asap and get a loan deferment ASAP!! they won't make you pay if you aren't working! there are only two things that can stop a student loan payment: in school deferment and unemployment hardship deferment. I forget if it is deferment or forebearance, but basically...the longer I stay in school, the higher my loan will be..but I won't have to pay it! and, when I was between jobs and they called me, I told them, and they told me to fill out that form! for years and even last summer, I have been looking for this head start/special program teacher forebearance that cancels out student loan. my luck I got in the year after they stopped! see if you can find thread in atoz...you may qualify to have it totally cancelled, if you meet requirements! in meantime...see if you can apply for hardship..unemployment deferment.

btw..have you looked into energy assistance for light/heat bill, free lunch, and or free/reduced child care? if your child is school age, be sure to tell teacher, pta president..everyone who will listen..so you can get Thanksgiving basket & Christmas basket and maybe toy drive gifts.

and see if you paid for extra insurance for mortgage protection and credit card protection payment for unemployment. I wouldn't tell them outright:unsure:, just ask for instance..."did I sign up for the plan that covers a payment or two if I become unemployed?" then, at least you know, if you are desparate, you can call back and tell them!

I had disability coverage on 1st car, and didn't even know. I had just delivered my daughter, and the car folks were harassing me every day. I started crying, telling them I just gave birth and blah blah..and the girl said..

Oh, you have disability coverage, just send in proof of your delivery and hospital stay..and your payments will be covered until you return to work! :eek:hmy:

you know, I asked about that with my new car. said it was too late. It was already done deal!

    hope this helps!

    Thank you, Master Pre-K.

My student loans aren't due for another month....and I've heard of the forbearance. Whew! I've also thought of going back to get my Master's (and have the loan deferred) but if district's won't hire me with my BA/BS and experience NOW....why would they with my MA (to pay me MORE?? I think not.) Want to get hired and receive tuition reimbursement.

Yup, doing the free lunch thing, food stamps....my pride is suffering but my kid isn't (yet)........

My car is so old it doesn't even have payments any more (thank God) but when it goes....oops! No bus service here.

Our energy assistance here is a joke. So are the 'baskets'. I qualified for Xmas last year and received expired food......

On a lighter note, my interview for a LTS is today. Something HAS to happen, right???? I mean, it can't get any worse??? (Can it?:help:)

    :thanks: for listening......can you tell I'm PO'D????? :D

yeah, I stayed up late...and didn't make it to food pantry. waiting for call from unemployment..so I think I will stay put and do some more online applications. think I will join you guys on the LTS hunt.

stale food is no good! that's why I keep searching for more pantries. some give out vouchers for grocery stores so you can buy fresh meat and papergoods, and pick your own stuff.

have you contacted your church? they usually have some resources available.

    you're welcomed turtle 321

can't get any worse??? (Can it?:help:)yeah, murphy's law...or master prek's law...I'm takin' it over!

everything that can go wrong, will go wrong, only to us, at the worse possible time!

I have seen snow in october!

Jeez! no bus...do you have cabs? commuter trains? a local trolley or shuttle..something? you must be way out in the boonies (boondocks, suburbs, sticks..unincorporated area)

i can't live without at least two busses. going all 4 directions, or at least taking me downtown!

my new place has bus right out front. I walked to school last night! will walk wed night too!

yeah, and I know you hate waiting!!! I rather walk than wait for a bus!

I start walking, and look back, and see nothing. You know what happens next.

    a bus zooms by.

Yup.....the 'burbs. I would need to walk at least 5+ miles for any type of transportation.

So....I travelled over an HOUR today (each way) to interview for a LTS position. I was so out of my element.....non-working moms with mercedes vans picking up their kids as school buses sit empty in the school lot. I was driving my heap o' junk thru neighborhoods with 5 car garages and 17 floors......manicured 4000000000000 acre lawns. I may be in the 'burbs......but not like that! :( Guess that job will go down the tubes......since I can't relate to their 'way of life'...(That was mentioned in the interview!!!!)

That's a different kind of prejudice!! What exactly did they ask? Are you sure YOU would be comfortable being the only person that makes below x dollars?, Are you sure you want to work with bratty rich kids all day? (no offense to rich people).
