I just had an interview today and I have a feeling that i might have gotten the job. However, I am unsure on if i want it or not. It's for a 4th grade position, and i am not familiar with the 4th grade curriculum. I have taught 3rd grade as a long term substitute. However, not 4th. Now this is my predicament...the principal is all about having the students pass the state testing, and he has recently fired many teachers from the building whom were non-tenured due to low test scores and bad classroom management. Now what if that is me next year, if i get the job? Also, if i don't take it, i can continue working in the preschool i am in (which isn't the best, but its a job that is paying decent) and i can apply for my masters in Nov. for school counseling, which i really, really, want to do. However, i still need to pass the MAT before i apply for grad school. So that is another thing...I am so confused on what to do, if he calls me tomorrow saying taht he wants to hire me. I don't know what would be best for me. Sorry so long...any advice??

You're in NJ, where the competition for jobs is brutal. You think you may have one. Your background is in 3rd, so you know the material that the kids will know coming into your class. If you don't snap up this job tomorrow morning, it will be gone by noon.

    Take the job.

I agree with Alice. Take the job. You will learn the curriculum. If you don't someone else will.

Um... I'd take it. Why assume that you're going to be the worst teacher? Don't think negative, hope for the best! You could be voted Best New Teacher of the Year!

Take it! You may find that this grade is a better fit for you! Many others have taken jobs in another age-groups and never looked back!:)

yep. i'm a 2 year high school vet and i'm tryna switch altogether into elementary school-and schools are actually willing to give me a shot! lol. it's all about what you have a passion for. and if elem. ed. is all you, then go for it! one grade level is not going to throw you completely off. you will def learn the curriculum and get acquainted and comfy. you'll be fine. and like delfina said, why assume you're gonna be worse- (i agree w/ fratbrats) you might find that this grade is better for you and you LOVE it!! well wishes...
