I'm in a teacher prep. program for Special Education here in Texas and am faced with the following homework problem: What might a new special education teacher need to know about federal , state, and local district policies/procedures as it relates to students with emotional/behavior disorders? Any input, however brief, is appreciated.
IDEA '04 is the newest authorization of the federal special education law--their website gives a wealth of info on the law, as well as the law itself in full text, in easy-to-search format. Here's the link: http://idea.ed.gov/ For state procedures, you may want to check your state's DOE website.
Probably if they qualify in that state for special services. Whom the information is allowed to be shared with...... How the students are handled........ I agree with the others go research what happens in your state. Good luck. Are you going directly into special education or have you been teaching regular ed already?
Restraint Training. I know that in the Houston area, Special education teachers are supposed to have training on how to safely restrain a child if neccessary. What their behavior plan is? ~~Those would most likely be district level. As for state and federal, it would be following their IEPs, I would think. I teach Lifeskills, but have some subbing experience in a ED classroom. I hope this helps somewhat. I'm just ending my third week of internship as an elementary lifeskills teacher, so my mind is rather tired.
oh--in an EBD classroom you'd also be dealing with outside agencies, so you'd want to find out policies on that--such as kids who live in group home and hospital settings, parole officers, DSS, the school social worker, outside social workers, DMH.
