Please help...found poop (eeew) on floor today.

Kinda gross but it does happen.. How old are the kids. I would sit down and have a bathroom talk about the rules of the bathroom and how to keep the bathroom clean.. Even create a class poster and post it in the bathroom.. then you are not targeting any 1 kid and the kids all contribute to the discussion

I would probably talk to them about what to do if they reallllly have to go, or feel sick. I reassure my kids that if they can't get my attention for some reason but have an emergency, then they should just run to the bathroom.

OH MY! I can't be exactly sure how I would handle this...however, I did want to share my experience today with you. I was taking attendance and the kids were reading independently. Suddenly, I saw something move out of the corner of my eye. Upon looking, I found a frog hopping around my room. ICK...I have a phobia of frogs!!! I have no idea how it got there, must have hopped through an open door in the hallway! What a surprise!!!!

Anyway..back to your poop story...what grade do you teach? I think I would have a classroom meeting and discuss the entire situation in a calm manor. Then I would simply ask that if anyone did it or knows who did it and ecnourage them to come talk to you in private. I would continue emphasizing the importance of honesty. Maybe someone will turn themselves in...HOPEFULLY! Best of luck to you. Let us know how it turned out!

Hmmm

Do you feel certain it was from a kid and not a critter? Just the way you said 'little pile' made me wonder. 3rd graders should certainly know better and probably don't leave 'little' piles lol. If you do think it was a kid, do you have any suspects? I might talk to them individually.

We have had problems in the past with kids "writing" on bathroom walls with poop, etc. It is often viewed as a sign of sexual abuse. If you have a counselor on staff you may want to keep them up to date on it. Good luck!

I wonder when this could have happened without witnesses. I don't think it is a good idea to talk specifically about the problem to the class at this time. I think I would try to fit in a talk to the class about being able to talk to you about something that is bothering them. At third grade level, I would have to say this "pile" is not confusion about how to take care of yourself when you have to go to bathroom nor is it confusion about where to go. (Except on the outside chance that someone really had to go and the bathroom was in use and they felt they just couldn't wait) This probably was some sort of a "message." Talk to your school counselor, principal. Watch students carefully for any signs of anti-social behavior. Is there someone who is extremely anything.... shy, violent, friendless, new, different, neglected....Do you have any suspects?

Speaking of poop in the classroom...

Feces Cleanup Lands Teacher in Hot Water

A substitute teacher been told not to come back to a Wichita school after she told misbehaving students to clean up the mess left when someone defecated in the back of a fourth-grade classroom.

Several parents at Gammon Elementary School raised concerns, said school district spokeswoman Susan Arensman. The teacher, whose name was not released, was filling in for a teacher on maternity leave.

After discovering the feces on Tuesday, Arensman said three students began laughing and acting up. That's when the teacher assigned the clean-up punishment. It was unclear who had defecated or whether it was done purposely.

Arensman said an investigation is ongoing. No decisions have been made about whether the teacher will be allowed to teach at other Wichita schools.

Cheryl Ward, who has a kindergartner and second-grader at Gammon, said the teacher's actions could have put the children's health at risk.

"There can be hepatitis and all sorts of things spread through human feces," said Ward, an emergency medical technician. "It just doesn't make sense to have children cleaning that up."

Arensman said she spoke with the teacher.

"She was more upset that news stories about this are making the school and her kiddos look bad," she said. "It's really unfortunate."

Last year I had a 5 year old urinating all over the bathroom floor on purpose. I later found out he was doing it at home, too. He was an "awful" kid in other ways(behavior). Later, another child did the same thing (another naughty child) Anyway, I did some sneaky investigating before I did anything in both cases. When I was pretty darned sure of who it was, I approached the child and said, "Johnny, show me where you peed all over the bathroom floor ." They looked surprised and walked right in the bathroom and pointed to their mess on the floor. Then I asked them why they did it and of course they said they didn't know. So, just be real sneaky and figure it out. That was no accident. Someone did that on purpose.

Did you make sure it wasn't from a shoe? Perhaps someone stepped in a dog doodle and it fell off a shoe.---Or someone was a little late getting to the bathroom and a part fell from their pants, I wouldn't make it an issue the first time around.

Judi...Yea there is usually one good winner every year...and that one child is enough to consume all of my time and energy...my non-resting/sleeping beauty is the one this year. I went into great detail on some other posts. It's an ongoing thing...at least I don't wake up nights screaming. One year I had this kid that was so AWFUL in every way, that I laid awake nights ... he needed some good old fashioned discipline and of course we can't do that in our profession...he spit in people's food and fun things like that.

Some of my little ones pee all over the place because they won't pull their shorts and undies down enough to get good aim... they want to go quickly and get back to playing... pottying is a waste of their time... lol.

I have found little pieces of poop on my floor right outside the bathroom door three times this month. I caught the kid carrying out his poop in his hand today. This is the third incident this month. I am at a complete loss. I've emailed the social worker, the nurse, principal, assistant principal, and the behavior team about this. This child is in third grade and struggles in all his school subjects. When I caught him, I made sure we were not in front of any students. This is the same kid that kept harping on the fact that there was poop on the floor yesterday. It took me 20 minutes to calm the class down. What should I do??

What does the student say when you talk to him? Personally, I would contact parents unless you have a good reason not to do so. If no one of the 4 you mentioned responds to your email, I would talk to one of them personally or via the phone. Difficult to know what to do until you know more.
