I'm planning on teaching a unit on plagiarism to my 7th graders at the beginning of the school year (I teach lang./lit.). Anybody know any good activities, links, etc.?

I am so tired of dealing with stolen work...and so I really want an informative unit that not only teaches what plagiarism is, but also how to avoid it and why it's wrong.

    Suggestions?

There are links at the end of this Answers.com article: http://www.answers.com/topic/plagiarism?cat=biz-fin

Try also any Web site that teaches journalism (Poynter, at http://www.poynter.org, is outstanding).

Or some of the following that I found by searching for "plagiarism teaching" or "plagiarism teaching kids":

No guarantees on whether they'll give you what you want, to be sure, but they did all look promising. And plagiarism is a HUGE topic in school journalism, so the Poynter site is bound to have at least a start for you.

Thanks again...this issue came up many times last year in my class, despite the fact that I thought I did a good job of going over the issue and teaching how to correctly use researched info. My conclusion is that I must not have done enough. It truly is a difficult issue for middle schoolers to wrap their heads around. I want to be sure to cover it in more detail next year in hopes it will cut down on the cheating.

Of course, one of my biggest problems was a student whose mom did most of his work. But that's a whole other can of worms...!

Research what happened to Carlos Bulosan. He was accused of plagiarism, blacklisted, but later exonerated. I believe there was some court stuff in there too, but I only saw a synopsis. I think it would be an eye opener for kids to see just how much it can ruin someone's life.
