Hi everyone, I'm looking into changing up my calendar board a bit for this coming school year and I need some ideas. I'd love to see pictures of different calendar boards. Will you please post a picture of your calendar board if you have one? I'd really appreciate it.

What type of calendar? Are you talking like calendar math type of calendar? Or just a place to display the month?

Check edhelper.com, they have great classroom calendars which you can personalize to be whatever you want them to be.

I just want to add that I kept a medium sized white board on my calendar bb. I recorded lots of the daily info there, and used it for examples, predictions, other things that I didn't want to maintain permanently.

I wanted to change mine, too. I want to make it more standards-based. The Calendar Math kit we've been using has many components that aren't very helpful.

I want to include a graphing section...something where we create a bar graph the first week, a line graph the second week, and a circle graph the third week. We're supposed to cover graphing during the first unit.

I also think I'll make my own day card to turn over and create a pattern that has more relevance.

The white board is a good idea. I've seen that in use. Not sure how I'm going to keep it up on the board.

Thanks everyone for the responses! My board has been the same for years and I really never paid too much attention to calendar time. There have been many days where I just skipped it. I realize now how valuable calendar time really is and would like to make some changes.

    little317....love your board!

I just bought this (very expensive) calendar that I've coveted for awhile. I already used the elements, but I just loved them all on one chart. In addition I'll have a clock, a larger hundreds pocket chart, a place value chart, and weather graph.

I'd love to see your calendar BB and hear more about how you are incorporating standards too. I'm starting in 5th grade this year and would love to have a purpose, more than to tell the date, for this area of the classroom.

I think that this year I will keep the same look to the calendar board but I want to add a few more smaller elements. I'll be adding the following:
Piggy bank with coins-the kids will tell me how much money we have.
Code date-I liked that idea from Mrs. Meacham
Mystery Box-I'll fill the box with some kind of shape. I'll tell clues about it and the kids have to guess what shape it is.

If you can get ahold of a sample booklet for the Everyday Math calendar, it can be a big help. We didn't use EM, but we bought the calendar kits and I loved mine. Every month the calendar cards feature different images - angles, plane figures, solid figures, etc. The monthly pattern is different, too. It is a very solid program.

I purchased this calendar last year as did 1 other second grade teacher and 2 1st grade teachers. We all love it. Everything is in it's place and the kids can see everything clearly. I tweaked it a bit by putting up a 12"x12" hundred chart (velcro) and added two small Judy clocks for time. (velcro)

Here's mine from the past year. I'm debating about how much to keep or take away for next year, too.

It's been awhile since I taught first, but mine was similar to others above and included:

-full month calendar with patterns on the days
-yesterday, today, tomorrow day cards (students would write this themselves)
    -decimal pockets for ones/tens/hundreds straws
    -spelling words for the week
    -days of the week (song)
    -months of the year (song)
    -weather
    -number of students present/absent
-number of days of school (represented in words and numbers using straws)

In second grade, I added money and a thermometer.

I train the students to run the Calendar Time with the whole group. I choose a person that is ready with a magic Wand (pointer).
Here is the order I use:
Yesterday, TOday, TOmorrow cards placed behind the Calendar #s.
Write on a blank 100s chart the day #
Draw a tally mark for the day #
    COunt the tally marks
    Add a straw to the 1s 10s 100s box
Count the straws 100s,10s then 1s
Represent the # of days with Coins ( I do this 4 ways - nickes row, dime row, quarter row, half dollar then after day 100 dollar);)

You all have no idea how much this thread is helping me! I am working in a K enrichment class soon and I have wanted to change the calender routine (its outdated and boring!). This thread has given me a lot of inspiration! I'm excited!

    Thanks!

What about using a plastic sheet protector? Put a piece of construction paper in it, and staple or clip to the wall. If you want to be able to take it on and off, maybe you could slip a piece of cardboard in it to stiffen it up, and use velcro?

I hot glue everything. I will hot glue a small whiteboard to the bb paper on my calendar area.
