Are there any good ones for gen ed? We have been having this huge issue with phonics at my school. We have many kids who are drastically behind and we think it's lack of phonics instruction in a lot of cases. Some teachers don't teach it because their grade level is "too old" even though the kids still need it. I just had a meeting with a 2nd grade teacher today and she was telling me that 2nd grade desperately wants to teach phonics correctly but they are lacking a systematic approach. They have a fontas and pinnel curriculum but apparently it was just tubs and tubs of material and they never got training on it. Her class has 14 kids who are reading at a DRA level 3 or below. She told me if there was an easy to implement, systematic program she'd be willing to buy it with her own money. I use Orton Gillingham for phonics in my groups, but it's really not meant for use in the gen ed room. Not to mention the training is very expensive. They use that "phonics song" thing and of course phonics comes up in regular reading instruction but it's just not been enough at this point. Suggestions?
