Let me give some background before I explain my situation...

In our second grade, we have 6 teachers, three teach language arts/social studies and three teach math/science. Each of our kids has their own individualized schedule and our classes are leveled. I have the "top" math group and I have a new student who so far seems to struggle a lot compared to the other kids in the class.

Coincidentally, when I seated them before school starts, I placed this little guy next to the most motherly little girl in my class. She has seemed to take him under her wing and has been helping him with everything, including his work pages.

I put them in groups (or pods) because I believe cooperation is important and I know that kids can learn a lot from each other but I'm afraid that, although I overheard her explaining things to him (not just giving answers), her helping hand may actually be doing more harm than good.

Any thoughts/advice? I'm not really sure how I should handle this situation.
